CHARACTERS
Plot refers to the outline of a short story. It refers to how the author arranges events to develop
the basic idea of the story. It has five parts as shown in the following figure:

Theme is the central message or moral of the story.
It is the author’s thought/s about the topic. It is the
lesson that you get from the story through the actions
of the main character.
Examples: Believe in yourself.
Love is mysterious.
Things are not always what they appear to be

Why do we need to study story elements?
1. Studying elements of story enables someone to understand the
author’s message better.
2. It provides deeper understanding of situations and events
(culture, history, that a story offers.
3. For students, studying elements of story helps them write better
and respond and interpret a text.
