With the long-term effects of Covid-19 being continually discovered, researchers With the long-term effects of Covid-19 being continually discovered, researchers have begun to examine the potential impact of Covid 19 on human IQ and general intelligence. “Long COVID” was a term coined by scientists for patients who have persisting/chronic neurological problems from Covid-19 (Baig 2021). These cognitive affects can include brain fog and trouble recalling words – equivalent to losing 10 IQ points (Salamon 2022). In Chapter 10 of our textbook, we discuss intelligence, and touch on theory-based intelligence tests. These tests are designed to measure our brain’s fluid and crystallized abilities by conducting logic problems and breaking mystery codes to identify their practical, creative and analytic intelligence (Scherz 2022). A study conducted in the journal BMC Health Science Services Research analyzed data from 46 adults who had contracted and had been hospitalized for Covid-19, half of those who needed ventilators. Three months afterwards they underwent intensive intelligence tests that comprised of memory, attention, and reasoning abilities (Ladds 2020). The researchers than compared their test results to 66,000 people who weren’t infected with the virus. Data showed that the Covid-19 survivors that needed ventilators developed at far slower mental processing speeds than the uninfected groups, demonstrating the cognitive loss of approximately 15 IQ points (Ladds 2020). If these patients were to undergo the same intelligence test one year later, would they still test for a loss of 15 IQ points?
