Paganism and Witchcraft revered nature but were not organized religions. Wicca involved divination and discovering knowledge through supernatural means in a non-hierarchical society. Christianity grew and deemed Witchcraft as evil Satan worship, influencing societies to persecute Witches, especially women. The Malleus Maleficarum manual described interrogating and torturing accused Witches using tests and instruments to obtain confessions during the peak persecution periods between 1550-1650 before views gradually changed.
Between 1692-1693 in Salem Village (now Danvers, MA), over 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft. 19 were hanged while one man was pressed to death with stones. The document provides historical context on the Puritan settlers in the area, their strict religious beliefs, and their tendency to attribute unexplained events to supernatural causes like witchcraft. It examines the societal factors that contributed to the outbreak of hysteria and accusations during the Salem Witch Trials.
Early Christian views did not believe in witches, but persecution began in the 1200s led by Pope Innocent III and Thomas Aquinas. Witch interrogations often involved torture and examining women's bodies for signs of witchcraft. Witches were seen as sexual deviants conspiring in secret societies, and helping/healing neighbors, which threatened the church. Between 1400-1700, an estimated 80,000-100,000 witches were killed in Europe, mostly women. The Salem Witch Trials in 1692 saw 19 people hanged and over 200 imprisoned on witchcraft charges. Modern witchcraft is now practiced as a religion by some.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

5. WITCHCRAFT
A type of SORCERY involving
the magical manipulation of
supernatural forces through the
casting of spells and the
conjuring or invoking of spirits.
6. FAMILIAR
• In witchcraft lore, familiars are low-ranking
DEMONs or IMPs given by the DEVIL to those
who commit to PACTs with him. They carried
out spells and bewitchments.
• Most witch familiars were believed to be in
animal form. A witch could have multiple
familiars. Cats, especially black, were the favored
forms.
7. PACT
• A binding agreement with a DEMON or the
DEVIL for gain and services beyond the power
of nature, usually in exchange for one’s soul.
• In 1633, Father URBAIN GRANDIER, a parish priest of
St.-Pierre-du-Marche in Loudun, France, was brought to
trial in the LOUDUN POSSESSIONS, also involving
bewitched nuns. A written pact was introduced as
evidence. It was written backward in Latin and signed in
blood. It read:
8. “We, the all-powerful Lucifer, seconded by Satan,
Beelzebub, Leviathan, Elimi, Astaroth, and others, have
today accepted the pact of alliance with Urbain Grandier,
who is on our side. And we promise him the love of
women, the flower of virgins, the chastity of nuns,
worldly honors, pleasures, and riches. He will fornicate
every three days; intoxication will be dear to him. He
will offer to us once a year a tribute marked with his
blood; he will trample under foot the sacraments of the
church, and he will say his prayers to us. By virtue of this
pact, he will live happily for twenty years on earth
among men, and finally will come among us to curse
God. Done in hell, in the council of the devils.

9. SABBAT
A wild party of witches, heretics, DEMONs, and the
DEVIL in a remote location. The participants
supposedly indulge in obscene behavior, orgies,
gluttony, blasphemy, and worship of the Devil.
The Devil usually appeared in the shape of a goat. He
presided over the sabbat while sitting on a throne. The witches
took off their clothes and paid homage to him by falling to
their knees and kissing his rump.
Unbaptized infants were offered up as sacrifices. New
witches were initiated by signing the Devil’s BLACK BOOK
in BLOOD, renouncing Christianity, taking an oath, and
trampling upon the cross. The Devil marked his initiates with
his claw (DEVIL’S MARK).
10. BLACK MASS
An obscene parody of the Catholic
Holy Mass at which the DEVIL is
worshipped. During the
Inquisition, witch hunters and
demonologists claimed that
witches—or any heretics—
frequently performed Black
Masses as part of their infernal
SABBATs with DEMONs and the
Devil.
11. MALLEUS MALEFICARUM
(WITCH HAMMER)
The most influential and important witch hunter’s guide of
the Inquisition. The book gives instructions for
interrogating, trying, and punishing accused witches and
details the nature, characteristics, and behavior of DEMONs
and the DEVIL.
Judges are instructed to allow hostile witnesses because
everyone hates witches. Torture is to be applied if the
accused do not confess voluntarily. Judges are permitted to
lie to the accused, promising them mercy if they confess.
13. DENHAM EXORCISMS (1585-1586)
The EXORCISMs of six fraudulent DEMONIACs by 12 Catholic priests.
• The Witchcraft Act of 1563 made the conjuring of spirits—which included
exorcism—punishable by death on the first offense. Nonetheless, the priests
undertook the exorcisms, ostensibly in order to convert Protestants back to
Catholicism.
• The demoniacs faked visions, revelations, prophecies, and convulsions. The
exorcisms were witnessed by huge crowds.
• One of the “performers” was Richard Mainey, an Englishman who had
become a Friar in France but left the order because of their strictness and the
fact that he disliked their diet of fish.
14. • Mainey’s demon, Modu, said that he had been bewitched by Goodwife White, a
woman who was commonly believed to be a witch. The priests captured White’s cat
and whipped it until it “vanished away.”
• Of all the demoniacs, Mainey put on the best show. Prior to Easter 1586, he
announced that every Sunday he would have a vision of purgatory, and on Good
Friday he would ascend to heaven. A large crowd gathered on the appointed day.
Mainey lay on his bed, preached and prayed, and then lapsed into a two-hour trance.
When he awakened, he sighed and said:
“My time is not yet come: our blessed Lady hath appeared to me, and told me
that I must live longer yet: for that God hath reserved me for a further purpose to doe
more good, and to tell of strange wonders.”
• Mainey’s last exorcism occurred in 1586. Modu appeared and said that he was
accompanied by seven other distinguished demons. They proceeded to act out the
SEVEN DEADLY SINS.
15. THROCKMORTONPOSSESSIONS (1589–1593)
•The first well-known case of possessed young people and the successful destruction of
witches based on the evidence of minors. The story of the five Throckmorton girls in
Essex, England, foreshadowed by a century the witchcraft hysteria that unfolded in Salem,
Massachusetts.
• In 1589, the youngest, Jane, began having sneezing fits and convulsions and fell into a
trance. Looking only at Jane’s urine, two Cambridge physicians diagnosed bewitchment.
When the 76-year-old Alice Samuel, whose impoverished family was often supported by
the wealthy Throckmortons, visited to offer her sympathies, Jane cried out against her,
accusing the old woman of WITCHCRAFT, saying,
“Did you ever see one more like a witch than she is? I cannot abide to
look at her.”
16. • The Throckmortons were visited by Lady Cromwell, wife of Sir Henry Cromwell, the
richest commoner in England. When she saw Mother Samuel, she too denounced her as a
witch, and ordered her hair burned.
• Back home, Lady Cromwell experienced a terrible nightmare, in which she dreamed that
Mother Samuel had sent her cat FAMILIAR to rip the flesh from her body. She never fully
recovered; and she eventually died 15 months later.
• The entire Samuel family was jailed. The Throckmorton girls were then allowed to extract
incriminating evidence, identifying nonsensical demons that often appeared as chickens.
• The Samuels were tried on April 5, 1593, on charges of murdering Lady Cromwell by
witchcraft. The court accepted the testimony of the Throckmorton girls, as well as several
other persons who claimed that the Samuel family had bewitched their livestock to death
over the years. The jury took only five hours to convict all three Samuels, who were
subsequently hanged.
17. • Since Lady Cromwell had allegedly died from the
dark magic of the Samuels, her husband, Sir Henry
Cromwell, received all the Samuels’ forfeited
property and goods.
• The Throckmorton case had a significant impact on
public belief in witchcraft. The case was widely
known through the publication of the account.
• It also had an impact on the governing class. The
Cromwell's served in the Parliament and, in response
to public pressure passed a new Witchcraft Act in
1604, which stiffened punishment.
18. LOUDUN POSSESSIONS (1630-
1634)
• Mass POSSESSION of Ursuline nuns of Loudun, France. The Loudun Possessions
have become one of the most famous cases of mass possession in history.
• In 1617, Father Grandier was appointed parish priest of Loudun. He was quite handsome,
wealthy, and eloquent, and a notorious womanizer. He often acted arrogantly and made many
powerful enemies.
• Grandier’s enemies approached Father Mignon, confessor to the Ursuline nuns. The plan was
for Father Mignon to persuade a few of the sisters to feign possession, swearing that Father
Grandier had bewitched them, causing his removal and downfall. The mother superior,
Jeanne des Anges, and another nun readily complied.
• Jeanne started to believe her own lie and became sexually obsessed with Grandier. Her
hysterical dreams and ravings disturbed the peace of the convent, causing more nuns to
succumb to hallucinations and dreams.
19. • The powerful Cardinal Richelieu, who despised Grandier, received reports of the
scandal and unsuccessful exorcisms. Eager to prove his power in the church and in
France, the cardinal created a commission to arrest and convict Grandier as a witch.
Meanwhile, the exorcisms resumed publicly.
• Skeptics continued to doubt that the possessions were genuine. Most of the nuns
failed the test of knowledge of foreign languages not known to them prior to their
possession. Nuns who did not know Latin were conveniently possessed by demons
who did not know Latin. Sometimes the nuns had to be coached to respond correctly.
• Despite these problems, the case against Grandier continued. In part, the case was also
being used against Protestants in general, claiming they were disciples of Satan.
Catholics and Protestants battled each other in possession and exorcism cases to try to
demonstrate who had the greater spiritual authority.
20. • The nuns’ accusations escalated. Madeleine de Brou, one of Grandier’s former lovers, was
accused of witchcraft, arrested, and imprisoned. Gentlemen in town were accused of consorting
with the Devil, and even the chief magistrate was accused of practicing black magic. Other
priests were accused of rape.
• As the circus escalated, friends of Grandier came forward as defense witnesses, but were either
pressured to keep silent or threatened with arrest as accessory witches or traitors to the king.
Inevitably, the Royal Commission sentenced Grandier to be tortured and then burned alive at
the stake.
• After the execution, many of the conspirators against Grandier became consumed with guilt.
Father Lactance died a month later, reportedly crying,
“Grandier, I was not responsible for your death.”
Father Tranquille died insane within 5 years, and the fraudulent Dr. Mannoury also died in
delirium. Father Barre was banished from the church for conspiring to accuse a priest of rape on
the altar; the bloodstains turned out to be from a chicken. Louis Chavet, one of the judges, fell
into depression and insanity and died before the end of the winter.
21. • Grandier’s death did not stop the possessions at
Loudun. Public appreciation of the exorcisms had been
so great that the convent continued the performances as
a type of tourist attraction. Twice a day except
Sundays, the afflicted nuns were exorcised for the
amusement of the crowds. They lifted their skirts, beat
their heads, bent backward, walked on their hands, and
used vulgar and blasphemous language.
• Such shows continued until 1637, when Cardinal
Richelieu, having satisfied his original aim—to
demonstrate his considerable power—righteously cut
off the performers’ salaries and put the convent at
peace.
