Wireless Charging Room
NO WIRES, NO CHARGING PAD, NO
PROBLEM
(Under Design For Living With Smart
Products)
Wireless charging is a farce. We’ve basically traded in charging cables for
custom-built surfaces that only work if we place our phones right on top of
them. What we want is to walk into a room and have our phone start charging
automatically. And it looks like that dream is now a tick closer to reality.
Even so the promise of wireless charging homes, rooms, hotel rooms and
restaurants may finally be here. Is this breakthrough too late for the iphone 8
(or iphone X) if and when it ships this fall? Probably.
“There are other charging mechanisms that are more far-field, that give you
much longer range,” sample says. “But there’s really not a mechanism that
gives you, say, 10 watts of power anywhere in a space.”
Introduction
Scope of work
A team of scientists at Disney Research, have built a gadget-charging, device-
powering room that’s safe for humans, their furniture and décor.
In a very dense paper published in the journal PLOS One, Disney researchers
Matthew Chabalko, Mohsen Shahmohammadi and Alanson Sample describe
the development of “Volumetric wireless power for livable spaces.”
Researchers built a free-standing room with aluminum panels covering the walls,
floor and ceiling. In the center of it, a two-inch copper pipe runs vertically from
floor to ceiling (we said it was ugly). Electric current runs down through the pipe,
into the floor, up the walls, over the ceiling and back into the pipe, looping at 1.3
million times per second. That looping electricity creates a room-filling magnetic
field that runs in a circular pattern perpendicular to the pole.
Research
Analysis
Design objectives
• In the center of the length of pipe, they placed an array of capacitors. The
in-pipe capacitors manage the electromagnetic frequency, lowering it
until the electric and magnetic fields are separated. Basically it's an
electromagnetic field, without the electricity.
• An environment pulsing with invisible magnetic and electric waves
doesn’t sound safe, but the researchers ran simulations to prove that it’s
safe to transmit 1.9 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power up to 320
USB-powered devices, without turning our delicate bodies into
electrified piles of goo.
Design Process
A. These illustrations show the
placement of the pipe, capacitors
and receiver coil.
B. The movement of the magnetic
field in the room
Wireless Charging Room Delivers Power
Through The Air
• The technology would allow any
electrical devices – such as phones,
fans and even lamps – to be charged
without the need for cables, as seen
in this room created by our
University to prove it works. Unseen
is the central pole that acts to boost
the reach of the magnetic field
• The system includes a pole at the
centre of the room to ‘fill in gaps’ not
not covered by the wall mounted
capacitors, but the authors say it
does still work without the pole,
seen in this graphic, but will result in
result in dead spots, where charging
charging won’t be possible
HOW IT WORKS:
ROOM SCALE
WIRELESS
CHARGING
Lumped capacitors, designed to compart mentalise thermal
systems, are placed within wall cavities in every wall
around the room.
These capacitors each generate a magnetic field sent out to
the room. The same capacitors trap harmful electric fields
inside themselves to prevent them from spreading.
This reduces the risk to humans and animals in the space,
as electrical fields can heat biological flesh.
A central conductive pole is installed in the room that will
act to generate a circular magnetic field. As magnetic
fields are circular by default this fills in any gaps in the
room not covered by the wall capacitors.
Devices like phones and laptops have wire coils inside
that can tap into the magnetic field to charge. The system
can deliver 50 watts of electricity without posing any risk
to people or animals in the room.
Autodesk fusion 360
Impact
• Wireless charging as a concept has been around since Nikola Tesla, a
Croatian inventor, first suggested in the 19th century that you could
transfer power between two objects via an electromagnetic field.
• The charging pad contains a loop of coiled wires around a bar magnet,
known as an inductor.
• When an electric current passes from the mains through the coiled wire,
it creates an electromagnetic field around the magnet.
• This can then be used to transfer a voltage – or charge – to the
smartphone.
• Apple is rumoured to working on a charging system that will operate at
7.5 watts.
• That means that it won’t offer faster charging speeds than conventional
chargers, which offer 15 watts as standard.
