Cus D'Amato
Cus D'Amato was a legendary American boxing trainer from New York who trained many world heavyweight champions including Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson. Despite never boxing himself, he made three boxers world heavyweight champions through his training methods which involved studying fear and how heroes face it differently than cowards. D'Amato rescued many young men from criminal lives through his gym and training program. He died in 1985 after a lifelong fear of killers due to a conflict with the mafia.
Jack Johnson - The Boxer
Jack Johnson was the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion from 1908 to 1915. He faced significant racism as a black champion at a time when blacks faced much discrimination in American society. After being wrongly charged, Johnson was sentenced to prison and escaped to Europe. His wife committed suicide unable to bear the persecution. Johnson spent his later years living lavishly until dying in a car accident while traveling to a boxing match.
Sonny Liston - The Boxer
Sonny Liston was born in 1932 as one of 24 children. He grew up in a poor family where his father would beat the wives and children. Liston did not receive much education and could not read or write. He began boxing while in prison for attempted robbery. In 1962, he became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, though he was an intimidating and feared fighter.
