programs. Windshieldsurveys are done bymaking visual observations ofa neighborhood or communitywhile driving;hence
the name. This type of surveylets you observe the housing conditions, use of openspaces, shopping, schools, types of
transportation, humanservices, protective services, and other aspects ofthe overall dailylife ofa community.
Before youstart, you needto identifythe boundaries ofthe neighborhoodor communityyou planto observe. For the purposes
of this course, you shouldkeepthe size of the area to no more than 2–3 square miles. The area should be large enoughfor

2. you to gather relevant information, but small enough that your observationdoesnot take youmore than1–2 hours. With
this size, it is not necessaryto use a car to complete the survey;you canalsowalkor bike. Whichever methodyou use, be
mindful ofyour personalsafety. It maybe helpful to mapout the route you willtake aheadof time. It can also be helpful (and
safer) to have another persondo the driving while you observe andmake notes.
Once you are onthe route, start makingobservations right away. Stop frequentlyto write down notes. A template is provided

The timing of your observationcanbe important inhelping you focus on specific items. I f possible, consider conducting your
surveymore thanonce at different times of the day. For example, ifyou make your observations tooearlyinthe morning, you
maymiss things that take place later inthe daythat provide a different perspective ofthe neighborhood. It is alsoimportant to
be as objective as possible whenmaking your observations.
