9. T
here was a sort of buzz…or electricity at KCI
Expo Center that first weekend of January
after everyone rang in the New Year. An
anticipation different than years before, because quite
frankly, this was not like years before.
With a new owner of Wide Open Magazine, some
fresh sets of hands, as well, as some of the old flare;
The Wide Open All Horsepower Showdown was about
to open its doors with a facelift. Years past, the All
Horsepower Showdown has been hosted by Wide Open
Motorcycle Magazine featuring only bikes. Going with
the updated name and theme of the magazine, the 2019
show also included new categories for our friends with
more wheels. Cars and trucks made their way into the
expo center flexing a whole new amount of power and
style for this north Kansas City event.
The Thursday night before the show, the garage doors
opened to let in the showstopper, Excessive Behavior. Yes,
a working semi taking a break to wow the Wide Open
family up close and personally with its insane paint job,
lighting and interior. The same rig featured on the cover
of the winter issue of Wide Open Magazine. With intent
to place her along the wall due to the sheer size, Owner
and Editor, Josh Baker, decided to try something a bit
kooky. Put that bad boy right smack dab in the middle.
The disco ball in the middle of the dance floor, so to
speak.
We must say…well done.
Guests purchased their tickets, got their hands
stamped, grabbed a complimentary winter issue mag
(before it hit shelves) and walked in to see a plethora
of metal, muscle and ingenuity at every turn. A little
bit for everyone! Vendors lined the walls waiting to
see the reactions and shake some new hands. It was an
expansive room full of smiles accompanied with some feel
good beats by Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders on
Saturday night. “We learned some things this year and
are taking notes for future events,” says Baker.
Some skeptics made their way in to fight back a grin
as they circled the floor. That’s ok guys, we’ll let you
take some time to marinate and admit it…the show has
improved and you’re excited to see what next year has to
offer! Welcome to the world of everything wide open,
folks!

15. Harley
Davidson
Museum
By Teresa Brenner
More than just a brand - perhaps a way
of life. Harley Davidson has been beating
black and orange into the hearts of motorcycle
enthusiasts since the early 1900’s. Originating
in a small shed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by
William S. Harley with the help of brothers
Arthur and Walter Davison back in 1903,
no one could understand the ride Harley
Davidson would come to as we continue to
make our way well into the 2000’s.
You can only appreciate the hard work,
creativity and forward thinking when looking
back over the years to where this iconic brand
has come today. We made the trip to the
Harley lover’s mecca…the Harley Davidson
Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Coming
over the bridge from downtown Milwaukee,
you can see the beacon coaxing you in. It
didn’t take much for us Wide Open fanatics to
feel the pull and we can’t recommend this stop
enough.
From a shed in Milwaukee, surviving the
Great Depression and now a truly global
brand; the walls of this museum tell the stories
of how Harley Davidson put a motor and two
wheels on the map.
The V-twin model was introduced in 1911
only to be the main model for bikes produced
after 1913, thus hurling Harley Davidson
in 1914 to manufacture more than the
competition, Indian. World War I proved to
be another mile marker for Harley Davidson
with the U.S. Military ordering over 20,000
Harley’s for the war.
By the 1920’s, Harley Davidson was
in over 60 countries and commanding the
motorcycle world. Tear drop gas tanks,
front brakes, flathead engines were among
the improvements made over the 20’s and
30’s. Being one of 2 motorcycle companies
SPRING 2019 | WIDE OPEN MAGAZINE | 15
16. to survive the Great Depression, Harley Davidson can
attribute this to the supply of motorcycles to the US and
other countries’ militaries during WWII...only to resume
production to civilians after the war ended. The rest is
history. Truly.
Step into the world of leather, metal, gasoline and
horsepower. Walk your way past the wall of gas tanks
with limited edition paint jobs featured over the decades.
Make your way down the expansive halls of the
museum to find treasures and relics at every turn.
History lessons, incredible paint jobs inspired by their
posts in time, progressions of ingenuity and pieces of
nostalgia. Simply put - an ode’ to the badasses.
From 3 men to over 5,000 employees today, Harley
Davidson has made itself a staple in the lives of so many.
We’re glad they did and we recommend our Wide Open
family make the trip to where it all began!

26. It was time to get dirty and see what this adrenaline
filled world was all about first hand.
Wide Open Magazine owner/editor, Josh Baker’s hair
is still standing on edge with a huge mischievous smile on
his face. Quite frankly, the guy hasn’t shut up about the
race since we left to make our way back to Kansas City,
Missouri. “You never really know what these things can
do until your looking up the side of a mountain,” says
Baker “and we made it!”
Dirty Turtle Offroad Park in Bedford, Kentucky set
the scene for an awesome event.
Greeted by some friendly faces, we made our way
passed the gate into a sea of Polaris, Can-am, Honda,
Yamaha and custom rigs. Some fresh off the trailer
without a spot on them. Others already covered from top
to bottom in mud...almost mocking those guys showing
up “late to the party.” It’s ok guys, there was plenty of
fun yet to be had.
We weren’t just surrounded by badass side-by-sides.
It was no surprise to see this event bring horsepower
of all shapes and sizes - 4 wheelers, tricked out jeeps
and broncos, dirt bikes and without giving into any
stereotypes here…a whole lot of badass trucks. Are we
surprised? I was just thankful Baker drove Big Red or we
may have gotten stuck in the Bedford mud.
Time flew by as more and more rigs made their way
in. Joey Beck, founder of Pro Rock/Pro UTV finishing
up announcements and a race day prayer for protection.
We were happy to see the camaraderie and core values
shining through. Let’s be real, this isn’t the safest sport,
so a little extra divine intervention couldn’t hurt!
We park the truck and make our way over to the one
PROROCK/PROUTVRACEDAY
Taking it slow around every sharp turn through the morning fog of
the foothills of Kentucky about 40 miles northeast of Louisville,
we were excited and a little apprehensive for the day ahead. I had
heard of and researched the Pro Rock/ Pro UTV Race series, but
one can not truly understand this off road world until you layer up
with 3 pairs of pants, mud boots and a big smile in the wet 30 degree
weather. Pro Rock was ready for us, but were we ready for it?

27. and only, Kenny Bell’s tent to get organized. Bell, also
known for KB3 UTV Products, pops his head around the
corner with a huge shit-eatin’ grin on his face. We had
just walked into his world and it was almost game time!
Drivers had one hour. This survival series had each
rig equipped with a tracking chip.
Mission: run that bad boy ragged as fast as you can
for one hour. Whoever gets around the most times, the
fastest…wins. "Survival Racing” was a solid description
for this race layout.
The amateur racers started to line up as I made my
way up to the watch station set above and not far from
the starting point. Looking out onto the track, this view
better illustrated the badass madness the racers were about
to experience. Hills, sharp turns, long straight aways - to
build speed - all lined with hundreds, if not thousands
of tires along the track. Each one with its own story to
tell. That was what made up only a small portion of the
course. One mile of track followed by about 4 miles of
back woods survival course. Despite the cold, I knew we
were in for an awesome day.
After the amateurs made their way back into the
woods, I decided to check on our Editor/Owner. Baker
was invited by Kenny Bell to experience the course first
hand. That’s right, KB3 was taking Wide Open on the
survival course for the Pro race. I wasn’t about to miss a
moment. The guys started to suit up and lock into Bell’s
Polaris 1000 turbo full mod with custom KB3 products.
After a lot of bonding with belts and safety gear, Baker
was locked in and ready to go working his way around
what horn sound they were going to use on the course.
Naturally, they went with clucking chickens…
It was time for the pro race. Rig after badass rig
made its way over to the starting lineup. The crowd
of onlookers had grown as Joey Beck and his team got
ready for the flag. Adrenaline built as I walked past each
rig catching smiles, fun banter and some solid inhales
of gasoline. The energy was exhilarating. Just enjoy the
incredible shots by professional photographer, Jonathan
Wright of Black Dog Photography. Wright caught the
momentum of the rigs…the mud flying through the air.
I felt honored to be allowed to walk among these guys as
the events unfolded.
They were off. One hour flew by as each driver/team
made its way through the course time after time. It only
took one lap for these guys and gals to completely cover
themselves and their rigs with mud. Par for the course
and it looked like a blast! Some casualties made their
way through with flat tires, bent frames and a couple of
broken belts lost out in the course. I hate to say, Baker
and Bell made their way back on a Pro Rock worker rig
due to a broken belt issue on their last lap around. Hair all
disheveled and covered in mud, Baker made his way over to
the tent to regroup. The smile on his face proved he had
just experienced something new and so amazing that even
not being able to finish the race could bring him down.
“Kenny is a wild man! He took us up a freaking
mountain at full speed. I didn’t know these rigs could
do this stuff!” Baker said while letting his blood pressure
settle.
The rock climbers began making their way back to
try their hands at the Hilling Killing. Think about it this
way... take a big, steep hill with rocks and obstacles…
then send crazy 4 wheel rock buggies up it as fast as they
can. The result: a whole lot of madness and fun.
As the day came to an end, we had the pleasure of
shaking hands with a lot of new friends around the event.
Shout out to Joey Beck and the Pro Rock/Pro UTV team
for letting us tag along. We can’t wait for these guys to
hit the Midwest. And lastly, a huge thank you to Kenny
Bell and the KB3 guys for showing us how it’s done!
Buckle up, everyone! This is only the beginning!

49. RIDING MOTORCYCLES AND BEING involved
in the Biker Community for over 25 years has
given me a unique perpective on the risk we all
share. In 2007, I was hit by a school bus, the driver
obviously not paying attention to my bright yellow
Honda Goldwing. In 2013, I was hit by a inattentive
driver on my Big Dog Chopper, in both cases,
I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE OTHER drivers
had adequate insurance to cover my medical
bills and pay me for the repairs to my bikes.
Unfortunately that is not always the case, often
with State minimum coverages as low as $15,000
for injury or death and $5,000 for property damage,
you often have to rely on your individual insurance
coverage to cover the majority of those exspenses.
AFTER SERVING 28 YEARS WITH KCMO FIRE
DEPARTMENT 26 YEARS AS A FIREFIGHTER
AND CAPTAIN, I typically responded to calls for
help after the initial incident.
FIREFIGHTERS ARE PRIMARILY responsible
for responding to fires, accidents and other
incidents where risks are posed to life and property
unfortunately we typically receive that call for help,
after the emergency. As a Farmers Insurance

value most as your Farmers Insurance agent
and now I can be there for my clients and have
protection in place before those incidents occur.

52. CJ MaroneyIf Wile Coyote were to close his eyes and think of the
automotive equivalent to strapping a rocket to a go-cart,
then what he might picture could look like CJ Maroney's
"Rad Rat".
CJ had been thinking about getting a new car to
build, to make his, something to take to shows and have
a little fun in to live out his earlier years of racing and
antics. After going for a ride in a friend’s car known as
the "Skull Orchard Express," he knew that new car was
going to be a rat rod. Being that CJ is in the aftermarket
performance industry, he had some
special requirements. He did
not want a cookie
cutter car
like
the
rest
of the
crowd
and most
of all, it had to have a Big Block Chevy.
CJ wanted to build a rat rod that would stand out
from the crowd, but still fit in at car shows and hotrod
rally's, so he set out to find his new rat rod. He did this
by starting with a 1932 Ford pickup that was chopped
4.5in and then channeled off over a custom 2x3 frame.
The interior is your normal affair for a cool rat rod:
custom bomber seats, just the essential gauges and the
cool oversized shifter that is so fitting for this style build.
Then peeking out from under the dash is the Holley
Performance Digital Dash and MSD 6AL ignition box.
Suddenly, you realize something is different about RadRat.
The most prominent feature on this car, the thing that
really makes it stand out has to be the big rowdy 504 cube
Big Block Chevy engine! CJ approached engine builder
Bob Morton about building this powerhouse of an
engine for his flyweight rat rod. Every item
for such a powerful build has to
be carefully selected
and top-shelf. The
rotating assembly
is from Scat using
their 4340 forged
52 | WIDE OPEN MAGAZINE | WIDEOPENMAG.NET
53. y’s ‘Rad Rat’crank and rods. Mahle forged 11.1 pistons were used to
stand up to the abuse the engine is capable of. The trick
to getting power out of any engine is the heads. CJ chose
a set of AFR 300cc Oval Port Magnum 24º Cylinder
Heads and then Bob worked them over before putting
them on the engine. A custom Howards cam was used
to be able to use the heads to their full potential. The
bottom was buttoned up with some items from Canton
such as oil pan and pump. Setting on top of the engine is
a Weiand Tunnel Ram and a set of twin Holley 650 CFM
Ultra XP Carbs. Exhaust exits through a set of open lake
style header featuring 1-7/8 primaries. When this beast
fires up, you and everyone around you knows this thing is
capable of 750-800hp!
Another trick to this car is getting all that crazy
power to the ground. A custom built TH350 was used
with some trick parts from TCI, and a 3500 stall torque
converter from Boss Hog. From there, the power is
transferred through the 9in rear that came from a 60s
F100 and the modified, a Yukon locker and 3.25 gears
get the car rolling. The suspension in the rear is a parallel
4-link with a pan-hard bar and coil-overs. Up front is
a more classic drop I-Beam setup using a Posies Rod &
Customs BigBlock Spring and struts. Stopping power is
probably the only thing sketchy about this car…currently
using late 30's drums up front and f100 drums in the
rear. CJ assured me the car is getting a Willwood upgrade
very soon. The low stance of the car is perfectly offset by a
set of 16in black steel wheels and Firestone whitewall tires
front and rear.
In my opinion, CJ has hit every mark
he set out to do. Build a cool rat rod, tons
of power that sets it apart from the crowd,
fun to drive and take to shows, and the best
part is a RadRat to enjoy with his friends and
family.
