The document discusses podcasting and its pedagogical uses. It begins with workshop objectives on describing, creating, and discussing podcasting. It then defines podcasting as multimedia files distributed over the internet for playback on mobile devices. The document outlines how to create podcasts using various recording and editing software. It discusses the pedagogical theories of constructivism that support using podcasting for learning, such as allowing students to construct knowledge by creating podcasts. Throughout, it provides examples of how podcasts can be used for lectures, student projects, and mobile learning.
Libraries are supporting student creativity and knowledge creation through resources like podcasting booths. A study of students who used a university library's podcasting booth found that students see podcasting as a way to both entertain and create new knowledge, filling information gaps. While students focused on content over technical production, they recognized production value impacts credibility. Students wanted to preserve their ideas and share knowledge. Libraries could further support student podcasters and nontraditional scholarship through workshops, community building, and instructional support.
Creative ways to use podcasts in the classroom can engage both teachers and students. Podcasts provide an additional tool for teachers to help students learn as the curriculum drives their creation. When students create podcasts, they develop a greater understanding of concepts and connections as they become more engaged. Teachers also have an alternative way to assess student learning beyond tests. Some examples of how podcasts can be used are to reinforce concepts, increase writing skills, and conduct alternative assessments.
This document provides an overview of podcasting and how it can be used for educational purposes. It defines podcasting as audio or video files that are published online and can be automatically downloaded to computers or MP3 players using aggregator software. The document describes how to find podcasts using various directories and how they are being used by teachers and students for learning, reviewing material, and demonstrating understanding. Podcasts allow learning to occur anywhere and anytime without constraints.

How Open Education Practices Support Student Centered Design & AccessibilityUna Daly
There is no “typical” student; how can we design courses that meet varied student needs? Traditional textbooks and other instructional materials with all rights reserved can often be difficult to make accessible or flexible enough to engage a diverse group of students. Join us to hear how open educational practices (OEP) including OER adoption can support accessibility of instructional materials and enable student-centered course design methodologies such as universal design for learning (UDL).
Tara Bunag from the University of the Pacific discovered she had a student, who is blind, enrolled in her graduate statistics course just weeks before semester start. Unable to get the traditional statistics textbook converted to a screen-readable format in that timeframe, she turned to the OpenStax Introductory Statistics text which was digital, accessible, and free online. Integrating multiple OER with tactile resources and open data sets, she was able to achieve a more effective learning experience.
Suzanne Wakim of Butte Community College will share how she uses open educational practices to design courses based on the principles of UDL to increase student choice, encourage critical thinking, and improve learning outcomes. These practices include giving students various ways of acquiring information, interacting with the content, and demonstrating understanding. The result has been far more engaging for both students and teacher.
When: Wednesday, April 11th, 11am PT/ 2pm ET
Featured Speakers:
Tara Bunag, PhD., Senior Instructional Designer, University of the Pacific
Suzanne Wakim, OER Coordinator, Honors Chair, Biology Faculty, Butte Community College
Sloan C 2009 - Promoting Critical Thinking Through Student-Created VodcastsChristine Nickel
This document discusses using student-created vodcasts to promote critical thinking. It outlines how vodcasts can be used for various educational purposes like distributing lectures, supplemental materials, and student presentations. The document reviews literature showing that student-created podcasts can improve theoretical understanding and practical skills when compared to instructor-created podcasts. It then describes a project where education students created vodcasts about artwork in the Gordon Collection to analyze pieces critically and educate others. Positive outcomes included student engagement and critical analysis, though editing issues arose. Future plans include expanding the vodcast library and researching impacts on motivation and engagement.
The document outlines the mechanics for a documentary film competition hosted by the College of Education at Mindanao State University. The competition aims to develop students' creativity, research, and media literacy skills. Students will work in teams to conceptualize, produce, and submit a 15-20 minute documentary on topics related to education, the environment, culture, or politics. The document provides guidelines for each stage of production and criteria for evaluating the documentaries. It also describes awards for the top three documentaries, photos, and informational tarpaulins created by participating students.
This document provides an overview of podcasting and webcasting technologies. It discusses how podcasting allows for audio and video content to be downloaded and listened to later on portable devices, unlike webcasting which requires an internet connection. The document develops a conceptual model to understand student motivations for using different communication media based on media richness theory. It proposes testing this model and various hypotheses about factors influencing student media preferences through a survey and logistic regression analysis. The results of this study are described as inconclusive, possibly due to lack of student experience with podcasting.
This document provides an overview of podcasting and how it can be used in the classroom. It discusses what podcasting is, how Audacity can be used to create podcasts, and ways that teachers have integrated podcasts into their curriculum. Some examples given include having students create podcasts to inform about class news, engage in oral histories, and supplement course materials. Overall it promotes podcasting as a way for students to actively participate in sharing knowledge and improving communication skills.
This document discusses the use of podcasting in education. It provides examples of how podcasts have been used at the university level, such as Duke University providing iPods to incoming freshmen loaded with orientation materials. Podcasts allow students to listen to recorded lectures multiple times, which can help improve exam scores. They also make instruction more convenient and flexible. The document also discusses studies that found students performed better on assignments when creating their own podcasts to share, and that podcasts engage different learning styles. However, podcasts could reduce class attendance if made too readily available. Overall, the conclusion is that podcasting benefits both students and teachers, and will continue growing in popularity in education.

1. Enrichment Lessons/Ideas Utilizing GarageBand
Michelle Whitehead
whiteheadm@wws.k12.in.us
Lessons Ideas
• The students read the book Phantom Tollbooth in their homeroom classes. For their projects, they
must choose one of the places the main character visits. Then using the pictures from the movie
they create a soundtrack to represent that section of the book. You could also include a summary
narrative (the student’s record themselves speaking) in the podcast.
• Have the students create public service announcements for Arbor Day, etc.
• Poetry Café: record the students reciting their poetry. You can include “mood” music and still
photography.
• Audio Books: Record the students reading a book. (Record in small sections at a time) Then alter
their voices using GarageBand, include sound effects, add some background music and you have a
“homemade” audio book. My students did this project several years ago and chose books that
appealed to our younger students (The Three Little Pigs, etc). Then we gifted the book and the CD
of their audio recording to someone in need. You could donate them to another class, the Boys
and Girls club, an after school program, etc.
Assessment Suggestions
• I have found it best (in the long run) to give the students a checklist of what they should
accomplish every day. They are welcome to work past it but I give them some minimums they
have to meet each day.
• For example, they have to have all their voice recording finished; 2 different tracks; 5 loops; 15
measures of music or 1 minute of sound.
• Below is an assessment of an audio only project. This project was a composition/arrangement for
music class; some of the content is more music focused!

content, delivery, graphic and musical
enhancements, technical production, and group
work.
