Charges against the driver were later dropped due to a loophole in Florida law not applying hit and run laws to private property. McWilliams began campaigning to change the law and in 2006 the Justin McWilliams Act was passed, making it a felony to leave the scene of a fatal accident on public or private property. Since then, additional laws have been passed increasing penalties for hit and run crashes and awareness campaigns, giving McWilliams hope and helping her find comfort and healing in educating others to honor her son's memory.

Women made significant gains in social, political, and economic rights during the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1970s, the National Women's Political Caucus was formed and Title IX banned sex discrimination in schools. More women entered college and the workforce. The 1980s saw further advances, like the first female Supreme Court justice and space shuttle astronaut. However, media depictions of women were complex, with shows portraying independent women but still under male control, and music exploiting women's sexuality as the ideal. Overall it was a time of both progress in rights and ongoing conflicts around traditional versus changing social roles.
Why do we need the #LBBill v2

She views the First Amendment, which protects freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petitioning the government, as the most important amendment. The impact of social media on society surprised her the most in the course.

Should We License Parents?
November 27, 1994|By Dr. Jack C. Westman. Dr. Jack C. Westman is a professor in the psychiatry department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the author of "Licensing Parents: Can We Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect?" (Plenum, $27.95).
Three weeks ago our attention was riveted on Union, S.C. The people of Union rallied to search for two abducted children and then mourned their deaths at the hands of their mother. We watched intently as that community united to protect its children.
In spite of the tragic ending of that episode, we saw how an entire community was galvanized to assist two children in distress. The pleas of the family on national television evoked a powerful empathy for the parents and children. We must not forget these strong feelings because in the three weeks since the event in South Carolina, 63 children have been murdered by their parents elsewhere in the United States.
The South Carolina tragedy is a wakeup call for our nation. We must wake up to the fact that we have an epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Three children are murdered by their parents every day in the United States. In 1992, the U.S. Advisory Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect declared that the neglect and abuse of our children is a national emergency.
The neglect and abuse of children affects us all. The National Commission on Children reported to the President and Congress that a critical number of parents are failing to fulfill their basic child raising responsibilities. The Commission linked our society's problems-educational, health, safety and economic-to the damage caused to children by the neglect and abuse of incompetent parents.
How can we respond? Our own failings as parents and our own potential for violence make us reluctant to judge parents as incompetent. Fortunately, that judgment really is not difficult.
The signs of child neglect and abuse by incompetent parents are apparent to anyone. A parent's murder of a child is the most extreme form. More commonly, incompetent parents are unable to manage their own lives. They pursue their own urges and damage their children by either neglecting or tyrannizing them. Their incompetence results from their own personalities, addictions, life events, socioeconomic disadvantage or a combination of these factors. Even if we were to eliminate poverty and discrimination, we still would have incompetent parents.
Incompetent parents, although few in number, are the sources of our habitual criminal and welfare dependency problems. About 4 percent of parents from all socioeconomic classes are incompetent. Some 3.6 million children have been neglected and abused by them. Many of these children become dangerous or dependent teenagers and adults who are increasing in numbers to drain public funds and erode the productivity of our workforce.
Our existing protective services for children have failed because they set standards for pare.

- 3. The Environment The White Rose Party believes that the preservation and protection of our planet should be our nation’s top priority. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live off of should be given the best care and not polluted with our car emissions, litter, oil spills, etc. We highly advocate the use of renewable resources to power our buildings and automobiles. Not only are the cost and environmental benefits of using solar and wind energy immense, but the development and maintenance of these two sources will create jobs and produce revenue for the communities around it. Also, with the use of this clean and infinite energy, oil will become a less valuable commodity, ceasing the conflicts and the environmental disasters associated with it.
- 4. Food and Nutrition America is the most obese country in the world and the White Rose Party will not tolerate that any longer. We will limit the number of fast food chains in every square mile and will levy taxes on processed foods. We will demand that the all restaurants in the U.S. provide nutrition information and an ingredient list for every item served. We will ban food additives known to cause health problems (e.g. trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, common food dyes, etc.). The White Rose Party heavily endorses organically grown produce, farmer’s markets, and community gardening.
- 5. Education The United States ranks 25 in Mathematics, 17 in Science, and 14 in Reading. The White Rose Party aims to put our nation in the top 10! We will achieve this by following the standards of the countries that dominate in education. We must create a strong societal belief that education is a top priority and support the notion that our nation’s educators are unsung heroes, for they are the men and women who are guiding the future leaders of America. Accompanying the prioritization of education, we will have higher standards. Passing scores for the high school exit exams, such as proficiencies, will be raised to encourage the efforts of teachers and students all across the states.
- 6. Gun Control The White Rose Party supports our people’s right to bear arms. We believe that it is unconstitutional for anybody to try to strip that right away from American citizens. That being said, we believe that while everyone is free to own and operate a firearm, we must implement more safety guidelines that firearm retailers and owners must abide by before selling and or purchasing a gun. Any person who wishes to purchase a gun, must undergo a mandatory psychological examination, along with criminal background checks and drug screenings. This mandatory exam is a precaution to prevent events such as the Columbine High School Massacre and the more recent Isla Vista killings. It will be a requirement that any person who owns a gun has an area to store it in where anyone in said person’s household who haven’t passed the psychological, drug, and criminal checks can not access it. The White Rose Party knows that guns don’t kill people, people do and we will do our best to protect our country’s Second Amendment rights while maintaining the safety of our citizens.
- 7. Abortion The White Rose Party is a pro-choice party. We understand that the decision of bearing or aborting a life lies solely in the hands of the mother and that no third party should interfere with her right to choose. While we know that the parents of this unborn life should have taken precaution and should take responsibility for their actions, we believe that every American has the right to choose whether or not they want to take on the challenge of parenthood. The White Rose Party will gladly fund Planned Parenthood along with any other organizations that provide mothers with safe and legal abortion services and provide anyone with sex education, STD screenings, and contraception.
