WhatsApp is an American freeware messaging and voice-over-IP service owned by Facebook that was created by former Yahoo employees Brian Acton and Jan Koum. It allows users to send messages, pictures, videos and documents as well as make voice and video calls on iPhones, Android smartphones, Macs and Windows PCs as long as an internet connection is available.
