The University of Michigan Health Sciences Libraries created a virtual presence called Wolverine Island in the online virtual world Second Life. This allowed the libraries to take on new roles beyond their traditional functions, such as providing instruction, events, and collaboration space. They encountered challenges in transitioning services to Second Life, but found benefits in engaging with other institutions and bringing learning opportunities to students in a new interactive format.
