commission to take the baton.”
However, it would be practically impossible for the SEC to require all the above-listed information in one expansive rule. In
addition, though it might please climate change activists, it would alienate issuers and bring heaps of scorn from the business
lobby. More importantly, though, it could violate a bedrock principle of SEC disclosure mandates: materiality.
Disclosures are material when they are reasonably likely to impact a company’s financial condition or operating performance.
Therefore, they are the most important to investors, to use the definition of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board.

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Markets
The ASX 200 finishes the week with a perfect win streak, up 3.2%. Global markets are experiencing a
strong relief rally as the banking situation stabilises but its probably worth chucking in this quote that
goes something along the lines of "the strongest rallies occur in bear markets". Does this rally have
more legs to run or will we see another destabilising event?
Materials outperformed, led by Fortescue (+4.1%), Rio Tinto (+2.5%) and BHP (+2.5%)
Healthcare higher thanks to broad-based gains, Cochlear (+2.4%) and Ramsay (+2.0%)
Energy underperformed after Woodside (-1.9%) fell despite higher oil prices overnight
Economy
China’s Manufacturing PMI eased to 51.9 in March from 52.6 in the previous month. Of note, China’s
March steel PMI fell back into contraction territory (down 1.7 to 48.4) due to significant drops in
inventories for both finished goods and raw materials
China’s Non-manufacturing PMI jumped to 58.2 from 56.3 in the previous month.
Service PMIs are now up for a third straight month to the highest level since May 2011

CHINA GDP
China set a GDP growth target of “around 5%” for 2023 earlier this month, which many consider
moderate following a low base in 2022 and stronger-than-expected economic activity so far this year.
But the country’s new leadership has echoed the cautious tone.
In his first press briefing as premier, Li Qiang told reporters on Monday that achieving the growth target
of “around 5%” won’t be easy, as China’s GDP surpassed 120 trillion yuan ($17.8 trillion) last year,
which is a high base. Li said that the economy will face new challenges this year.

Latin America’s economies held up well last year despite the shocks from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
and global interest rate hikes. In 2022, the region’s economy expanded by nearly 4 percent,
employment recovered strongly, and the service sector rebounded from the damage caused by the
pandemic.
Inflationary pressures are receding in many countries due to the early and determined efforts of central
banks as well as lower global prices of food and energy. However, core inflation (that is, excluding food
and energy), remains high at around 8 percent in Brazil, Mexico, and Chile (and somewhat higher in
Colombia but lower in Peru).

Blog – Stock Market Analysis and Commentary for March 31, 2023
Summary:
Stocks rallied on Wall Street and closed out a winning March despite a long list of worries for
investors.
The S&P 500 gained 1.4% Friday and rose 3.5% for the month, with tech stocks leading the way.
The index also notched its second winning quarter in a row after tumbling through most of last
year on worries about high interest rates.
Friday’s gains came after a report showed inflation slowed in February, though it was still high
on a historical basis. A slowdown in inflation could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to
take it easier on interest rates.
On Friday:
The S&P 500 rose 58.48 points, or 1.4%, to 4,109.31.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 415.12 points, or 1.3%, to 33,274.15.
The Nasdaq composite rose 208.44 points, or 1.7% to 12,221.91.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 34.10 points, or 1.9%, to 1,802.48.
For the week:
The S&P 500 is up 138.32 points, or 3.5%.
