PARLEYAIR CHALLENGE
MARINE POLLUTION
• A massive amount of plastic trash ends up in our oceans every
year.
• The ocean currents have formed five gigantic, slow moving
whirlpools where the plastic collects, nicknamed Vortex.
• Recent studies indicate that at least 5 trillion pieces weighing
over 250,000 tons are now floating in the world's oceans.
• The majority of the plastic debris sinks or remains in the
Vortexes.
PROBLEMS
FACED BY THE
BIODIVERSITY
• After sunlight photodegrades the plastic into small
pieces, aquatic life and seabirds mistake these fragments
for food and ingest it.
• A 2012 report from WSPA indicates that between 57,000
and 135,000 whales are entangled by plastic marine
debris every year.
• Millions of birds, turtles, fish and other species affected
by plastic marine debris.

PARLEY X PORTER
MAGAZINE

content, commerce and cause,
Porter is dedicating its Summer
Escape issue to plastic pollution
and joins the AIR pledge to
become a plastic-free publication
by 2019.
• Porter has an oceans theme running throughout,
with a 63-page “Ocean Portfolio” that features a
cover shoot of model and Parley ambassador
Anja Rubik in the Maldives.
• The issue also includes an interview by Parley
founder Cyrill Gutsch with oceanographer Sylvia
Earle, describing how readers can effect change.
• The oceans campaign will run for two months
across Porter Digital, Ocean-focused content will
also be present both in print and online.
The aim is to make sure we are fast enough
to meet the ultimate deadline before we lose
a treasure : the fantastic blue universe
beneath us — The Oceans.
IF THE OCEANS DIE, WE DIE.
