The direct object of a verb is the thing being acted upon. To identify the direct object, find the verb in the sentence and ask "what?" or "whom?". The answer is the direct object. Only transitive verbs, which act upon another object, will have a direct object. Linking verbs do not act and thus do not take direct objects, instead they link the subject to a complement.
