Slides from my 2014 Society for Applied Anthropology presentation entitled "What Are You Doing Here? Making the Academy-to-Business Transition as a Practicing Anthropologist."
Ethical Dilemmas : Action Plan and Handling them through PI ModelShashi Bhushan Singh
Presentation on our proposed model for handling ethical dilemmas in business, can be extended to any discipline.
The PI model ( Principle - Impact) model to help take those difficult ethical decisions in business.
Presentation given to Anthropology Graduate Students at the University of Memphis that report the results of a survey on that posed the question "If you could tell graduate students about one professional standard that is routinely violated but is of critical importance as they embark on their careers - what is that standard?"
Structured Collaboration: Workshopping Skills for Experience DesignEmily Bowman
Collaboration is a well-entrenched tool of experience designers, often achieved by teams casually putting their heads together to solve problems throughout the design process. Structured collaboration in the form of workshops or solutioning sessions are less frequent and require a bit more effort to pull off effectively, but the results can be far more pervasive and impactful on the success of a project. In this session attendees can expect to learn how to identify when a structured approach to collaboration would be more suitable to the problem at hand and how to properly prepare for them. We’ll also explore a sample of methodologies and how to facilitate in a way that keeps a room full of people on track and focused on the goal.
Advancing User-Centeredness, Solving Pain Points, and Driving Innovation: Les...Emily Bowman
While the practice of user experience strategy is gaining ground, political and operational struggles crop up when trying to incorporate these new tools and techniques. Organizational legacies don't disappear and not everyone understands the value of such efforts. To help newcomers to the strategy table identify where to focus your efforts and what battles are worth the fight, we'll explore the lessons learned mapping the customer experience and operationalizing a customer-centered strategic framework for a large automotive client.
Architecting Change: Navigating Ambiguity, Uncertainty, and Volatility When D...Emily Bowman
Projects collapse. Money evaporates. Users hate your design. Designing for users requires not just familiarity with change, but a deep understanding of how to interpret its effects on the design process. Using a change management model, we’ll explore how to solve problems, adapt to change, and get work done when things are in flux.

Praticing Anthropology in Business and DesignAmy L. Santee
This is a presentation I gave to Dr. Jeremy Spoon's undergraduate Applied Anthropology class at Portland State University on May 19th, 2015. I discuss my educational background, academia-to-work transition, work experience, and how I apply my anthropology training to my work as a User Experience (UX) Researcher.
Practicing Anthropology in User Experience, Design and BusinessAmy L. Santee
User experience, design and business are perfect fields for anthropological practice, but what does it look like to work in them, and how do you get there in the first place? Amy will share her journey as a practicing anthropologist, touching on her transition from academia, work experience, use of anthropology skills, project examples, career reflections, and advice for those who are interested in this particular line of work.
Amy Santee is an independent user experience and design research consultant based in Portland, OR. Her work spans a breadth of sectors and industries, including retail, e-commerce, healthcare, computer hardware and software, consumer technology, automotive, insurance, home improvement, and community development. In addition to freelancing, she has worked within corporate, agency and start-up design teams. She combines her anthropology training with a user-centered design approach to solve real problems, advocate for people and their values, and help businesses feel confident in their decisions. She received her MA in Applied Anthropology from The University of Memphis (2011) and her BA in Anthropology from Eckerd College (2009). She blogs about business, design, anthropology and careers at www.anthropologizing.com.
27 creativity and innovation tools - in one-pagers!Marc Heleven
27 creativity & innovation tools is an overview of various commonly used techniques in creativity, innovation, research & development processes.
All in one-pagers!
The techniques are grouped by:
- Diverging & Converging techniques
- Open & Closed challenges / problems
- Products & Services situations
- Individual & Group techniques
Techniques can be classified in many, many ways, yet the only real
measure is the passion and comfort you feel with a technique.
The only way to really get to know the techniques is to use them.
So go ahead, try them and share your experiences.
Enjoy the overview!

This presentation describes the sources of my epistemological and hence methodological approach, and then presents an overview of my research design.
I note SlideShare doesn't do a very good job of the PowerPoint animations which makes some of the slides more comprehendable - so suggest you download it. Also allows you to see the speakers notes on many of the slides.
My methodology will be fully written up in my final thesis document.

Neuroscience of Virtual Reality and Behavioral Change - Giuseppe Riva, Ph.D.Riva Giuseppe
Keynote at the 3rd Annual Innovation in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health - Stanford, October 6th 2017
The keynote discusses the added value provided by Virtual Reality (VR) in transforming our external experience by focusing on the high level of personal efficacy and self-reflectiveness generated by their sense of presence and emotional engagement. More, it outlines the potential future use of virtuality for transforming our inner experience by structuring, altering, and/or replacing our bodily self-consciousness. The final outcome may be a new generation of transformative experiences that will open a new field - Embodied Medicine - in which the goal is not to change the physical body but the experience of the body. The possible practical application of Embodied Medicine in eating disorders and obesity is also presented and discussed

4. CONSIDERATION No. 1
Practicing anthropology in business means
creating your own opportunities for
application and success, and re-thinking your
approach to practice.
“
”
8. CONSIDERATION No. 2
Doing a job isn’t about “doing
anthropology.” It’s about solving problems
with an anthropological perspective.This
involves constantly re-conceiving practice
and adopting a flexible professional
identity.
“
”
13. CONSIDERATION No. 3
Being an effective business professional
involves making compromises, sacrifices and
adjustments to academically informed work
practices (e.g., communication, research,
producing information, etc)...
...even if you are trained in an applied program.
