WHY MEDIA ETHICS ?
• Unlike everyone its very important for the media to be ethical as media is considered
as very important source for information so if this attitude will be taken lightly then its
very easy for a media brand or its umbrella brands to loose there trust and credibility
and even sometimes brings them to a new trend forcefully.
FORMS OF MEDIA ???? CONTROL ??
• Free Media is still a major topic of Discussion as people still thought of different models of controlling
media i.e. Authoritarian and even libertarian model of controlling.
OR
Authoritarian Model
◦ According to this model, media should be controlled by Certain Authorities and Should not
be independent. Media Changes its characteristics which are :
◦ Direct control of the media by government and authorities
◦ Power exercised to control media
◦ Control by the powerful ruling minorities or a group of ruling majorities
◦ Media has no power to criticize the government, its work, decisions and policies
◦ Media can not offend the ruling parties in any way
◦ Its said That Times Now & Republic are the BJP Spokespersons
◦ Biggest Example- Paid News

• This Model believed that the Media should be independent and also this model denies any control of
any authority or even the state over the media.

MEDIA ETHICS & INDIA
ETHICS ???? & INDIA ????
• 1. In 2007, FTV & AXN were temporally Banned by I&B Ministry as the
content shown on both channels were found offensive.
• 2. In 1999, Hindustan Times Editor VN Narayanan had to resign after his
HT Article was found as Plagiarized from The Sunday Times in London
• 3. Farhana Ali, an International Policy Analyst issued a complaint against
India TV and according to her complaint the channel also deliberately
portrayed her as Pro India and Anti Pakistan.
Scandal Surrounding RUPERT MURDOCH
◦ In 2011, News of the World (NOTW) shook the foundations of his empire. The media baron was
accused of illegally hacking into the phones and messages of Individuals, hiring private
detectives and even bribing police officials in order to obtain information for NOTW’s stories.
◦ Its also said that the voicemails of Celebrities, Politicians and even the members of British royal
family were illegally accessed by the NOTW Staffers.
◦ This Breached RIGHT TO PRIVACY & Right to Know
◦ In 2011 the company who owned NOTW, News Corp. apologized and even admitted liability it
even compensated some complainants. Later it became more problematic as all the NOTW
Head staff were arrested.
