This document provides an overview of desertification and policies in Bangladesh to address it. It begins with definitions of desertification and discusses driving forces of land degradation in Bangladesh such as inefficient irrigation, imbalanced fertilizer use, improper pesticide use, and unplanned rural infrastructure. Statistics are presented on desertification causes both natural and human-caused. The presentation outlines specific causes accelerating desertification in Bangladesh and lists advisory committees. It then describes seven key policies that Bangladesh has implemented to deal with environmental issues like desertification by addressing land degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and water resources. The outputs, strategies for mitigating desertification and alleviating poverty, and actions to prevent desertification are summarized.

3. ๏ฑ What is desertification ?
๏ฑDriving forces of land degradation in
Bangladesh :
๏ผLow efficient irrigation system.
๏ผImbalanced fertilizer use
๏ผImproper use of pesticides
๏ผUnplanned rural infrastructure
6. Causes of desertification:
๏ฑNatural causes: Climate condition
and geological setting
๏ฑAnthropogenic causes
๏ฑSome immediate causes in
developing country
7. The causes which are accelerating
desertification in Bangladesh :
๏Man โ Land ratio
๏Upstream division/ withdrawal of river water
๏Cultivation system
Farakka Badh Jhum cultivation Agrochemical
9. Policy Framework
Bangladesh government has taken some policy and
initiatives to deal with environmental issues including
desertification. These policies do not deal with
desertification directly rather address through issues
like land degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, water
resource etc.
10. ๏ฑPolicy-1: The National Environment
Policy,1992(NEP)
โข Techniques should be adopted to
prevent land erosion
โข Development of forest
โข Shrinkage of forest should be
stopped
11. ๏ฑPolicy- 2: Water Policy,1999
โข Water should be available to every
one
โข Proper use of surface(e.g. rainwater)
and ground water should be ensured
Rainwater harvesting process Example of rainwater harvesting in
Bangladesh
12. ๏ฑPolicy- 3: National Land Use Policy,2001
โข Introduced โZoningโ system
โข Ensure land use in harmony with
natural environment
๏ฑPolicy- 4: National Forest Policy,1994
โข Emphasized the afforestation
program
โข Conserve water and soil resources
โข Strenghthening agriculture sector
13. ๏ฑPolicy- 5: National agricultural Policy,1999
Make nation self sufficient in food
Increasing production of all crops
Ensure derpendable food security
system

14. ๏ฑPolicy-6: Costal Zone Policy
๏ This place is prone to natural disasters.
๏ The pace of social and economic developments has been
slowed down because of natural disaster.
๏ The government has recently formulated the costal zone
policy.
๏ Which will guide a general guidance to all concerned for
the management.
๏ Development of the costal zone.
15. ๏ฑPolicy-7: The Wetland Policy::
๏ For addressing the issues of wetland degradation and utilization
๏ Bangladesh government drafted a wetland policy in 1998 with the help of IUCN
Bangladesh Country Office
๏ It address the issues related to wetland protection and utilization of its resources.
๏ Puts special emphases on the conservation of wetlands.
16. Outputs:
๏ฑReduced effects of land degradation/desertification
and the improvement of the socio-economic status of
the people.
๏ฑImproved water availability for domestic and
agricultural purpose.
๏ฑFood security for all communities.
Desertification mitigation and Poverty Alleviation
Strategies:
17. Actions to prevent desertification:
๏ฑIntegrated land and water management are key methods.
๏ฑProtection of vegetative cover can be a major instrument.
๏ฑ Use of locally suitable technology is a key way.
๏ฑLocal communities can prevent desertification by providing
effective dryland resource management.
๏ฑBy turning to alternative livelihoods .
๏ฑInspiring people to cultivate more plants
