A little about me
I’m originally from Southeastern Kentucky from a
place called Hell-for-Certain in Leslie County. Yes, the sign is
spelled wrong; meant to deter thieves but it never works.
I currently reside in London, KY and teach evening
classes on the Corbin & Manchester Campuses.
A little about my past
 As a child and throughout high school I
participated in numerous extra curriculars:
singing, 4-H, pageants, track, volleyball, and many
school and honor societies.
My Family life I live with my husband of nine years, Tracy; he works at the Wal-
Mart Distribution Center in London, KY. We married on 6-7-08, so I
guarantee he won’t forget that anniversary.
 My parents are Patricia, a retired elementary school teacher, and
Eugene, a foreman for a coal company.
 Since my parents divorced when I was six, I also have a step-mother,
Rhonda, who works at Kemper Furniture in Hazard, KY.
 One thing I love most about my family is having so many nieces and
nephews. I have two nephews and a niece on my side and 12
nephews and nieces plus 3 great-nieces and 1 great nephew on my
husband’s side. You may hear me brag about them often.
My college life
 The major purpose of this course is to transition
you and prepare you for success in the college
setting. I can assure you it is worth it for all the
time and sacrifice you will make during your
college years.
 From a young age I knew I would be going to
college directly after high school. Only I wasn’t
told that there was actually a choice in the matter;
I was brought up to believe that after high school,
you went on to college regardless. Ask my mother,
she’ll tell you she made me believe this as well.
My college life
 I started taking college classes my senior year of high school. The first college
course I took was Children’s Literature at Hazard Community College in
Hazard, KY.
 The course was actually for second semester sophomore students but it was
the only one available at the time I needed (the last hour of school since I had
free time from having too many HS credits.) But since the topic interested me
I did well, getting a high A in the class.
 My first college professor, Mrs. Venita Caldwell is the one who inspired me to
one day want to teach college myself.
 Beginning college after high school was sort of rough for me; after losing my
grandfather to cancer and having another tragic accident in the family soon
after I had a hard battle with homesickness and anxiety. Therefore, I got a
two year degree from a local college so I could stay home. Beginning my
junior year I had to go on campus in order to finish my Bachelor’s degree on
time. Coming to EKU and making new friends and getting involved in
community service was just the thing I needed. My last two years of college at
EKU were the best.
My time at EKU I transferred in to EKU during fall 2006 after getting my Associates degree
from Hazard Community College.
 I started out in the Burnam dorm but homesickness quickly got to me and I
went back home for the semester, commuting to EKU’s extended campus in
Manchester, KY.
 However, in order to finish my Bachelors on time I had to move on campus
come spring 2007. I moved to Walter’s Hall since several of my friends were
there and got into the activities on our floor, the Women’s Interests of Today
and Tomorrow floor, and it was the best time.
My college life
I was on the 8th
floor of Walters Hall and let me tell
you, fire drills were no fun; walking down eight floors
worth of stairs.
Education complete
 I graduated from EKU in May 2008 with my Bachelor of Science in Elementary
Education.
 I graduated University of the Cumberlands in May 2011 with my Master of Arts in
Education.
 I have not yet decided if I’m going to pursue my Doctoral degree. I would like to
but it is just not an option at this time.
Try your best & you will succeed!
 I look forward to having you in my class and hope you enjoy your learning experience
here as well. I promise I will not set you up for failure but will ensure that this class
is beneficial to you as a student and one I would have wanted to take when I was in
college myself.
 Throughout this semester, I want you to remember to follow what my late
grandfather always taught me: Can’t lives on won’t street—If you cannot do
something it is because you will not try.
