NL-Graphs: A Hybrid Approach toward Interactively Querying Semantic Data
A variety of query approaches have been proposed by the semantic web community to explore and query semantic data. Each was developed for a specific task and employed its own interaction mechanism; each query mechanism has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Most semantic web search systems employ only one approach, thus being unable to exploit the benefits of alternative approaches. Motivated by a usability and interactivity perspective, we propose to combine two query approaches (graph-based and natural language) as a hybrid query approach. In this paper, we present NL-Graphs which aims to exploit the strengths of both approaches, while ameliorating their weaknesses. NL-Graphs was conceptualised and developed from observations, and lessons learned, in several evaluations with expert and casual users. The results of evaluating our approach with expert and casual users on a large semantic dataset are very encouraging; both types of users were highly satisfied and could effortlessly use the hybrid approach to formulate and answer queries. Indeed, success rates showed they were able to successfully answer all the evaluation questions.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques are one of the most used techniques in the field of computer applications. It has become one of the vast and advanced techniques. To fulfill this necessity NLP has been emerged as the means of interaction which narrows the gap between machines (computers) and humans. Later on various algorithms were developed along with the concept of AI (Artificial Intelligence) for the successful execution of NLP. How machines learn to talk. Machine Learning for Conversational AI
Machine learning methods are increasingly being used for conversational AI. Sequence-to-sequence models have been applied to social chatbots and performed well in challenges like the Amazon Alexa Prize by learning from large dialogue datasets. However, neural models trained on open-domain data can have issues like generating incorrect, biased or inappropriate responses. Evaluating conversational systems also presents challenges regarding how to deal with abusive user inputs. Future work is needed on improving evaluation metrics, ensuring ethical use of data, and developing mitigation strategies for edge cases.

A lot of recent work in neural models and “Deep Learning” is focused on learning vector representations for text, image, speech, entities, and other nuggets of information. From word analogies to automatically generating human level descriptions of images, the use of text embeddings has become a key ingredient in many natural language processing (NLP) and information retrieval (IR) tasks.
In this talk, I will present some personal learnings from working on (neural and non-neural) text embeddings for IR, as well as highlight a few key recent insights from the broader academic community. I will talk about the affinity of certain embeddings for certain kinds of tasks, and how the notion of relatedness in an embedding space depends on how the vector representations are trained. The goal of this talk is to encourage everyone to start thinking about text embeddings beyond just as an output of a “black box” machine learning model, and to highlight that the relationships between different embedding spaces are about as interesting as the relationships between items within an embedding space.

Making Natural Language Processing Robust to Sociolinguistic Variation:
Natural language processing on social media text has the potential to aggregate facts and opinions from millions of people all over the world. However, language in social media is highly variable, making it more difficult to analyze that conventional news texts. Fortunately, this variation is not random; it is often linked to social properties of the author. I will describe two machine learning methods for exploiting social network structures to make natural language processing more robust to socially-linked variation. The key idea behind both methods is linguistic homophily: the tendency of socially linked individuals to use language in similar ways. This idea is captured using embeddings of node positions in social networks. By integrating node embeddings into neural networks for language analysis, we obtained customized language processing systems for individual writers — even for individuals for whom we have no labeled data. The first application shows how to apply this idea to the problem of tweet-level sentiment analysis. The second application targets the problem of linking spans of text to known entities in a knowledge base.

Abstract
Until very recently, the generation of punctuation marks for automatic speech recognition (ASR) output has been mostly done by looking at the syntactic structure of the recognized utterances. Prosodic cues such as breaks, speech rate, pitch intonation that influence placing of punctuation marks on speech transcripts have been seldom used. We propose a method that uses recurrent neural networks, taking prosodic and lexical information into account in order to predict punctuation marks for raw ASR output. Our experiments show that an attention mechanism over parallel sequences of prosodic cues aligned with transcribed speech improves accuracy of punctuation generation.

The theory and practice of digital libraries provides a long history of thought around how to manage knowledge ranging from collection development, to cataloging and resource description. These tools were all designed to make knowledge findable and accessible to people. Even technical progress in information retrieval and question answering are all targeted to helping answer a human’s information need.
However, increasingly demand is for data. Data that is needed not for people’s consumption but to drive machines. As an example of this demand, there has been explosive growth in job openings for Data Engineers – professionals who prepare data for machine consumption. In this talk, I overview the information needs of machine intelligence and ask the question: Are our knowledge management techniques applicable for serving this new consumer?

Paul Michael King has an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Today he works for Healthwise where he has strived for the past four years to lay the groundwork for a patient-centered ontology to support IA across a wide range of use cases. He started his IA career at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as a Semantic Engineer where he developed the IA for an engineering research portal to preserve a vast body of knowledge left by several generations of retiring engineers. This same work also laid the groundwork for NASA’s emerging enterprise ontology. After JPL he worked for the Informatics & Telematics Institute in Greece where he served as liaison to European projects to support technological innovation and develop semantic technologies within the unified market.
XAI LANGUAGE TUTOR - A XAI-BASED LANGUAGE LEARNING CHATBOT USING ONTOLOGY AND...
In this paper, we proposed a XAI-based Language Learning Chatbot (namely XAI Language Tutor) by using ontology and transfer learning techniques. To facilitate three levels of language learning, XAI Language Tutor consists of three levels for systematically English learning, which includes: 1) phonetics level for speech recognition and pronunciation correction; 2) semantic level for specific domain conversation, and 3) simulation of “free-style conversation” in English - the highest level of language chatbot communication as “free-style conversation agent”. In terms of academic contribution, we implement the ontology graph to explain the performance of free-style conversation, following the concept of XAI (Explainable Artificial Intelligence) to visualize the connections of neural network in bionics, and explain the output sentence from language model. From implementation perspective, our XAI Language Tutor agent integrated the mini-program in WeChat as front-end, and fine-tuned GPT-2 model of transfer learning as back-end to interpret the responses by ontology graph.

We begin by presenting the recent advances in the area of artificial intelligence, and the high level ideas underlying the progressively narrower domains of machine learning, deep learning, and foundation models, which have emerged over time as dominant paradigms for artificial intelligence. We describe the tremendous progress of these models on problems ranging from understanding, prediction and creativity on one hand, and open technical challenges like safety, fairness and transparency on the other hand. These challenges are further amplified as we seek to advance Inclusive AI to tackle problems for over a billion human beings in the context of India and the Global South. We present our work on multilingual models to democratize information access in a diverse set of Indian languages, on healthcare in environments where we lack data in digital form to begin with, and on analysis of satellite imagery to help transform agriculture and improve the lives of farmers. Through these examples, we hope to convey the excitement of the potential of AI to make a difference to the world, and also a fascinating set of open problems to tackle.

In this tutorial I will introduce recent work in applying weak supervision and reinforcement learning to Questions Answering (QA) systems. Specifically we discuss the semantic parsing task for which natural language queries are converted to computation steps on knowledge graphs or data tables and produce the expected answers. State-of-the-art results can be achieved by novel memory structure for sequence models and improvements in reinforcement learning algorithms. Abstract
Until very recently, the generation of punctuation marks for automatic speech recognition (ASR) output has been mostly done by looking at the syntactic structure of the recognized utterances. Prosodic cues such as breaks, speech rate, pitch intonation that influence placing of punctuation marks on speech transcripts have been seldom used. We propose a method that uses recurrent neural networks, taking prosodic and lexical information into account in order to predict punctuation marks for raw ASR output. Our experiments show that an attention mechanism over parallel sequences of prosodic cues aligned with transcribed speech improves accuracy of punctuation generation.

The theory and practice of digital libraries provides a long history of thought around how to manage knowledge ranging from collection development, to cataloging and resource description. These tools were all designed to make knowledge findable and accessible to people. Even technical progress in information retrieval and question answering are all targeted to helping answer a human’s information need.
However, increasingly demand is for data. Data that is needed not for people’s consumption but to drive machines. As an example of this demand, there has been explosive growth in job openings for Data Engineers – professionals who prepare data for machine consumption. In this talk, I overview the information needs of machine intelligence and ask the question: Are our knowledge management techniques applicable for serving this new consumer?
New Frontiers in IA: Design in the Era of Cognitive Computing
WIAD 2016 - World IA (Information Architecture) Day in Boise, Idaho.
Paul Michael King has an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Today he works for Healthwise where he has strived for the past four years to lay the groundwork for a patient-centered ontology to support IA across a wide range of use cases. He started his IA career at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as a Semantic Engineer where he developed the IA for an engineering research portal to preserve a vast body of knowledge left by several generations of retiring engineers. This same work also laid the groundwork for NASA’s emerging enterprise ontology. After JPL he worked for the Informatics & Telematics Institute in Greece where he served as liaison to European projects to support technological innovation and develop semantic technologies within the unified market.
XAI LANGUAGE TUTOR - A XAI-BASED LANGUAGE LEARNING CHATBOT USING ONTOLOGY AND...
In this paper, we proposed a XAI-based Language Learning Chatbot (namely XAI Language Tutor) by using ontology and transfer learning techniques. To facilitate three levels of language learning, XAI Language Tutor consists of three levels for systematically English learning, which includes: 1) phonetics level for speech recognition and pronunciation correction; 2) semantic level for specific domain conversation, and 3) simulation of “free-style conversation” in English - the highest level of language chatbot communication as “free-style conversation agent”. In terms of academic contribution, we implement the ontology graph to explain the performance of free-style conversation, following the concept of XAI (Explainable Artificial Intelligence) to visualize the connections of neural network in bionics, and explain the output sentence from language model. From implementation perspective, our XAI Language Tutor agent integrated the mini-program in WeChat as front-end, and fine-tuned GPT-2 model of transfer learning as back-end to interpret the responses by ontology graph.
