Craig Newmark began Craigslist in 1995 as an email list sharing local events in San Francisco, becoming a website in 1996. It expanded to 9 more US cities by 2000 and over 700 cities in 70 countries by 2009. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark created it to foster similar communal sharing and trust online as he experienced on other platforms. In 2001, Craigslist started a nonprofit foundation to promote community building and connect people to local resources through free and low-cost events and online resources. Current CEO Jim Buckmaster joined in 2000 and contributed many of the site's key features and architecture.
