1. What is the Game Sense Approach and
how will it implemented in our class?
-A Guide for Parents
2. What is Game Sense?
• Game sense is a relatively new
approach in teaching and coaching.
It is the teaching of game sport skills
such as strategy, tactics and
movements (Towns, 2002)
• It focusses on using games to teach
students what makes a game
successful, while developing the
necessary skills and understanding
• A model generated by Bunker and
Thorpe (1982), outlines the process
of the Game Sense Approach.
3. The Fundamental Movement Skills
• For students to be able to
participate in different games,
they must first learn the
fundamental movement skills.
• Game sense focuses on building
these skills. It is through the
repetition of these skills, that
students form muscle memory.
• This muscle memory allows
students to freely and
successfully engage in sports
games.
4. What are the Strengths of implementing a
Game Sense Approach?
• Students who would normally feel intimidated by sport get to experience
a different approach which may be less intense than traditional PE
lessons. i.e. Drills
• Students can gain an understanding of the of the game from a strategic
and tactical perspective
• Students are able to gradually build upon their skills
• The Game Sense approach allows for modification making it an inclusive
method of teaching PE.
5. Links to the PE Syllabus
• Through implementing a Game
Sense Approach in PE lessons,
Students will develop the skills
required of them from the Board of
Studies PDHPE Syllabus (2012).
These skills include:
- Communicating
- Decision making
- Interacting
- Moving
- Problem solving
• Through applying game
sense, 6R will be achieving
the overall outcome of:
• GSS3.8 Applies movement skills
in games and sports that require
communication, cooperation,
decision making and observation
of rules
6. How will a Game Sense be implemented
in our class?
• Each of 6R’s PE lessons will be made up of a number of smaller activities
that have a focus on skill development
• These skill building activities will then lead to a game of sport
• This ensures that the students build the correct skill and understanding to
successfully play the game
• This approach encourages all students to get involved and promotes a
positive learning environment through encouragement, support and
teamwork.
