This is a presentation given to delegates at the itSMF conference in Melbourne, Australia, 2014. Inspired by David Weinberger's book Everything is Miscellaneous, I assert that hierarchy of knowledge is dead and that we must learn how too search our workplace knowledge assets more effectively.

Miscellaneous rules: the hierarchy of knowledge is dead

Grant Gunderson
Grant Gunderson is a renowned outdoor photographer based out of Bellingham, WA and Salt Lake City, UT. He specializes in photographing skiing and backcountry adventures. Gunderson's photography has been featured in major outdoor publications and used in marketing campaigns for brands like Black Diamond and Patagonia. He is known for striving to never shoot the same picture twice and for his attention to technical detail, clean lighting, and crisp subjects in his action photography from the snow.

Educational technology has evolved over time, starting with the military using audio equipment to teach foreign languages during World War II. In the 1960s, instructional television usage grew and helped facilitate learning. Nowadays, both computer and non-computer technologies are used in classrooms, like smartboards, class websites, and class blogs, allowing students access to course materials anywhere and providing opportunities for instant feedback.
Supervision and leadership in libraries
Supervision and leadership are important functions for ensuring positive outcomes and quality services. Supervisors conduct basic management tasks like decision making, problem solving, planning, and employee performance reviews. They also organize departments, hire and train new employees, and ensure compliance with policies. Good leaders and supervisors build up employees, are supportive and consistent, use time wisely, and allow freedom while pursuing goals. Characteristics of strong leaders include self-confidence, self-awareness, strong values, advocacy, and accountability. Effective supervision benefits both employees and organizations.
