Webquest – Planning Your Grandparents’ Trip to Germany
Here’s the situation
Your grandparents want to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a wonderful trip to Germany.
They need your help to plan the trip out, and to determine a fairly exact cost of their trip. Friends have given
them many recommendations, so you need to plan around a number of particulars.

How to do it
You need to create an Excel book for them. Remember that you need to make calculations for two people,
when in a price-per-person area like tickets for entry into a museum, for example; other prices will cover both
grandparents, like car-rental and hotels. Some prices will be in USD ($) and others will be in EUR (€). You
should have separate columns for € and for $, and the € will needconverting to $ - using the power of Excel to
make the conversion.
Sheet 1 – Summary: will be the summary of all categories of expenses. Categories should be
1. Airfare
2. Berlinairport (Tegel) to the Hotel
3. Hotel in Berlin, including accounting for breakfasts (not included in the price of the room)
4. Berlin public transportation “BVG” card
5. Car rental
6. Gasoline and tolls – Berlin to Hamburg to Bremenand back, and 1 day driving to visit Bremen Harbor
7. Hotel in Hamburg, including accounting for breakfasts
8. Entrance fees to monuments in Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen
9. Food not including breakfasts (see recommended allowances below)
Sheet 2 – Hotels: will contain details – price, photos, location, etc. – about the two hotels they will stay in. Keep
in mind that breakfast is not included in the price of the room. Record the cost of breakfast for the number of
days they stay at each hotel.
Sheet 3 – Car: will contain details about car rental andthe four trips they will take.
Sheet 4 – Germany: will detail the Germanmonuments they will visit. Include labeled photos of all monuments,
entrance fees, and other details.
Sheet 5 – Harbor: will detail the Harbor-visits they will make. Include labeled photos of all Harbors, entrance
fees, and other details.
Your Excel book needs to be informative and also attractive. Remember that you will show this to your
grandparents, who will appreciate clarity, organization, and appearance.

The particulars
Day 1 is a travel day.
Grandparents want to fly in regular seats on United Airways and Lufthansa– round trip ColumbusCMH overChicago ORD toBerlin Tegel TXL.
They want to take a van/limo from Berlin Tegel Airport to their hotel. (The driver will expect a tip of
10%.)
For Days 2 through 8, they will spend 7 days and 7 nights in Berlin at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in
Berlin.
While in Berlin, they want to use the BVG for those 7 days to travel around the city. For this, they will
need a Berlin BVG pass for unlimited travel in Zones A&B for the 7 days.
They want to visit a number of places in Berlin, and need to know how much the entry fees will be.
On the 8th day, they want to rent an economical carfor 2 days and begin with a drive from Berlin to
Hamburg, Germany. They will need to know the cost of the car rental. They will need a map and
directions for that trip, and they will need to know if there are highway tolls and how much they can
expect to pay for gasoline for this trip(and other side trips while there).
They will stay in Hamburg for 2 nights; the Grand Elysee Hotel, Hamburg has been highly
recommended to them.
Because they are huge fans of old ships and harbors, while in Hamburg they want to make a couple of
trips to visit the harbor, Hamburg and Bremen are famous for them.
On their 11th day, they will drive back to Berlin Tegel airport(account for mileage/gas again), drop off
their car, and return to Columbus.
Food: Breakfasts for their 9 hotel-mornings will cost an additional amount per person per day. This
needs to be accounted for, and the hotel websites have this information. For their 9 full days in
Germany, for lunches you should budget 20€ per person per day. For dinners, you should budget 60€
per person per day. (In Germany, tips of 15% are included in the menu prices, so you don’t need to
worry about that.) Last – for the 5 days in Berlin, have them set aside an additional 10€ per person per
day for stops at cafés.
