The document summarizes research that examined English language learners' comprehension of website information and perceptions of website usability. Participants analyzed a tourism website in English and completed questionnaires testing their understanding of content and assessing usability, interface, and navigation. Results from accuracy scores and correlation analyses provided insight into readers' abilities and impressions when interacting with an English-language website.
This document provides an overview of a guest lecture on how school and community environments impact student and teacher health and well-being. It discusses topics like how school facilities affect surrounding communities and vice versa, issues around transportation and walkability to schools, and how interior and exterior school environments can impact environmental health, focusing on factors like air quality, noise levels, and access to outdoor spaces. Background information is provided on why environmental health is important in schools, and examples are given of specific schools and the environmental issues they face.
The Decision to Go Green: Individual vs. Group Influences on Our Likelihood t...Marcel Harmon
2009 BECC Conference Presentation - Both the text and the slides
Recent studies by researchers affiliated with the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions (CRED) have demonstrated that the long term benefits that result from green, sustainable design, are given more weight by groups as opposed to individuals. Our evolutionary past, with its focus on daily survival, has designed our individual analytical and emotional decision making systems to focus on short-term costs/benefits as well as those “threats” that have an immediate impact on our daily lives. Pressing work deadlines, job loss, etc., have more meaning to us than melting polar ice caps or invisible gases in the atmosphere. But in cohesive groups, decisions are more likely to be made with respect to the common good; and when the common good coincides with the delayed benefits obtained from sustainable design, groups are more likely to go “green” than individuals.
In the building construction industry, short term benefits often outweigh long-term benefits when making decisions on how green to be. Following the above line of reasoning, this suggests that individuals or small groups whose common good does not coincide with green’s delayed benefits are the primary decision makers involved. The author will test this by comparing a dataset of LEED, non-LEED but green, and conventionally designed facilities with respect to the decision makers – who they were, their demographic make-up, and their core values. The results should provide insight into the challenges faced in greening our built environment and the solutions needed to ensure a more rapid move to sustainability.
Implementing a shared instance of the Evergreen ILS for an academic library c...kramsey
Project Conifer is a consortium of four Ontario academic libraries implementing the open-source Evergreen integrated library system (ILS). It aims to create a single union catalog and shared server infrastructure. The project represents increased cooperation among Ontario academic libraries. Art Rhyno, who has extensive experience with ILS systems, discusses the history and goals of Project Conifer and highlights advantages of the Evergreen open-source software such as flexibility, cost savings, and community involvement. He also outlines upcoming work to further develop the system before the scheduled go-live date in May 2009.
The document discusses human limits in deep oceans, including that most people can hold their breath for around 40 seconds but the record is over 6 minutes, the deepest free dive is 136 meters, and average breathing and body temperature on land. It also notes how homeostasis changes underwater, with breathing and pressure increasing with depth, and temperature decreasing steadily until reaching around 4-5°C at deep levels, affecting human respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Blogging can be a useful tool for non-profits to connect with donors, recruit volunteers, and provide transparency. A blog allows an organization to share updates, insights, and have conversations. For non-profits to blog successfully, they should post regularly, engage with other blogs by commenting, have someone passionate about blogging to manage it, and promote their blog. All that is needed to start is an email address and content to share.
Beth Kanter provides several easy ways for people to use their online networks and skills to support charitable causes. These include donating small amounts of money through auctions or petitions, sharing content and skills to help non-profits, and giving time by volunteering. Kanter notes that even those with limited budgets can make a difference through these low-effort online activities. She encourages people to leverage their social networks year-round to support worthwhile causes.
The Human Side of Achieving Sustainable SuccessMarcel Harmon
Approved AIA CES course; submitted for GBCI CE approval. This is a draft version of the presentation. Final slides will be available by 7/30/2014. Course Description: For our built environment to be truly sustainable, we must have a holistic, contextual understanding of the building/occupant interface, and how that is influenced by human factors, including relevant physiological, psychological and social/cultural factors. This is the only way to effectively align occupant and other key stakeholders wants, needs and behaviors with building capabilities and operational policies. Otherwise building performance and occupant health and productivity are negatively impacted, limiting a project’s ability to meet its sustainable goals. Using previous master planning, design, retrocommissioning and post occupancy evaluation case studies, presenters from M.E. GROUP will demonstrate how these human factors can be accounted for and integrated into solutions moving forward, as well as what happens when they aren’t effectively accounted for.
