This document provides an overview of audio and video editing. It discusses that editing is an essential part of broadcast production that requires training beyond the scope of the course. It then lists some common free and inexpensive editing programs like Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Audacity and GarageBand. The document also gives a brief history of video editing and includes some videos about editing. It notes some courses at WCC that provide hands-on editing experience and online resources for learning. There is no quiz but a board discussion is assigned for students to prepare for the final.

• Audio/Video Editing is a vital part of
Broadcast Production requiring
dedication and training far beyond the
capability of this particular course but
we can cover some basics as well as
some resources you can easily access
outside of this class

• EDITING PROGRAMS:
–There is no shortage of video and audio
editing programs out there and, like most
things, you can spend nothing or hundreds of
dollars on them
–You should try some of the free/inexpensive
options first to see if you want to take the
plunge on something more
advanced/expensive such as Final Cut Pro or
Premiere Pro

4. EDITING
• Editing is all about discarding what you DON’T want/need
from your audio/video recordings and taking the parts you
DO want from your audio/video recordings so you can
assemble them into a finished product that tells the
story/gives the information you desire
• Because editing takes place after the actual production
shooting, we consider it part of POST-PRODUCTION
• A good audio/video editor is detail-oriented, patient, and
creative and an essential part of any broadcast production
process

–Audacity:
• A free open source digital audio editor and
recording computer software application,
available for Windows, OS X, Linux and other
operating systems
–GarageBand:
• A free audio editing software program that
comes with Mac computers; often used for
music but is also appropriate for all types of
audio recording
