4. Project Ideas Presentation
30 & 31 of October 2019 - BluePoint Brussels
What is the challenge
• Multiple hazards are not considered during
decision making
• Tools are needed to assess the risks due to
multiple hazards
• Target governments, local authorities, water
utilities etc.
Proposed approach
• Hazard modelling
• Cascading dynamics across systems
• Framework for vulnerability assessment
• Interdependencies modelling
• Hazard risk evaluation using IoT, Big Data
and AI/ML
• Tools to model systems and
interdependencies, and use to make
decisions
• Satellite information + sensors and models
to learn uncertainties and changes in time
• Conduct standardization activities for
handling multi-hazard risk assessment
• Link with H2020 DRS projects.
Increased pumping from boreholes by the sea
may affect water quality, and as a result, the
yield, which will then have a cascading effect on
the food production, as well as in the increased
use of processed water for agriculture.

The project results are expected to contribute to:
• Pre-standardization and standardization activities related to multiple-
hazard risk assessment
• Help in investment prioritization for risk reduction
• Assist in identifying areas which are vulnerable to multi-hazard risks
• Support the design of what-if scenarios affected by long-term drivers
• Support decision making considering risks e.g., for water allocation
• Assist decision-makers in modeling cascading risks affected by
short/long-term environmental and social changes
