Washington Irving was the first American writer to achieve international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book in 1819-1820, which included the short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Irving sought solely to entertain his readers. After starting his writing career in New York, he traveled throughout Europe, drawing inspiration from other cultures. He eventually returned to America and purchased a home called Sunnyside in Tarrytown, New York, where he lived for over 20 years and hosted many influential visitors until his death in 1859.
