Daily deals websites like Groupon operate as an intermediary between merchants and consumers. Merchants negotiate a deal with the website to offer consumers a limited-time discount on products or services. Consumers purchase coupons or vouchers for these deals which they can then redeem with the merchant.
The industry is dominated by Groupon, which pioneered the daily deals model. It has over 500 employees across 50 cities and an average deal price of $30. LivingSocial is the next largest player but still much smaller with around 1,000 employees in 6 cities and higher average deal prices. Competition among daily deal sites is intense as they seek to expand into new markets and increase the number of subscribers.

Associated Electric Cooperative has once again demonstrated leadership in reducing emissions by removing up to 90% of mercury from its coal-burning units using refined coal. As one of the first utilities to test refined coal technology, Associated has helped bring this lower-cost option to market. By signing a 10-year contract to use refined coal produced with CCS CyClean technology, Associated has significantly reduced mercury emissions while offsetting $8.3 million in fuel costs in 2012. Associated's proactive investment in emission controls and refined coal positions it well for compliance with the EPA's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards.
