Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman directed the animated documentary Waltz with Bashir to understand his own memory of witnessing the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon as a young soldier. Through interviews with other veterans, Folman pieces together what happened while also depicting how memory can be flawed and dynamic. The film uses surreal animation and dream sequences to portray these issues of memory and trauma. Folman discovers that many soldiers have no memory of the massacre or have memories that could not have actually occurred, showing how memory fills in gaps over time.
