There are 5 types of viral hepatitis viruses - A, B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis A and E usually cause acute infections that resolve spontaneously, while B and C often result in chronic infections that can lead to liver failure and cancer. Over 1.3 million people die from viral hepatitis each year worldwide, making it a larger cause of death than tuberculosis, malaria, or AIDS. India has over 52 million people carrying the hepatitis virus, with 95% unaware they are infected. Getting tested is important as 80% of liver cancers are caused by a prior hepatitis virus infection. While hepatitis can be prevented through vaccines for A and B, hepatitis C is also now curable.
