3. IMMEDIATE EXPRESSIONS ON CARTON
Since 1988 and intensifying in the last four years, artist
Thierry Geoffroy/ COLONEL has been regularly producing
carton art works consisting of drawings, texts and
occasionally newspaper or printed paper clippings.
Depending on the moment, circumstances and the artist’s
state of mind, the expressions ranged from direct and sharp
to personal and doubtful. These diary-like registrations,
expressing the raw and unpolished artistic sentiments, were
put on display for the audience the same day they were
produced, as living, pulsing artworks about the now.
Today the carton art works form an impressive collection that
can be analyzed chronologically, thematically or esthetically
showing what once was ultracontemporary. The precise
registration of the date on each artwork makes it possible
to find back to the specific historic context and situation the
artist was expressing about.
Gallery Ultracontemporaine manages the distribution and
selling of the artworks in the collection. For this book we have
made a selection of 24 available artworks on themes such as:
criticism as artistic praxis, emergencies in the world today,
apathy in the society, communication, the notion of time and
the ability to catch the moment, contemporary versus
ultracontemporary.
Buying art works that were ultracontemporary in the past is
about supporting the ultracontemporary art of today.
