Habitat for Humanity
Our Mission
With God’s grace, and the cooperation of
people from all walks of life, Tacoma/Pierce
County Habitat for Humanity partners with
families in need to build and own simple,
decent affordable housing.
Partnership with Families
Habitat for Humanity is a homeownership program.
• To qualify, partner
families must
complete 500 hours
of “sweat equity”
• In return they pay an
affordable mortgage
Volunteer Driven
The work we do would not be possible
without your hard work and support.
All are welcome.
Habitat is an ecumenical Christian organization. We
work with people of all backgrounds.

• Founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller
• 2 million people housed in over 90 countries
• 10th biggest U.S. home builder in 2013
Our affiliate (Tacoma/Pierce County):
• Founded in 1985
• Completed 210+ homes
• More than 350 adults and 610 children housed
Habitat for Humanity Worldwide
For every house built by
Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat
for Humanity, we tithe $4500 to
Habitat for Humanity
Guatemala.
This builds an entire home!
Habitat Families
and Affordable Housing
Need in Pierce County
In the past ten years, rent in Pierce County
has increased by 54%.
Housing Choice (Section 8) Vouchers:
• Local Housing Authority
Waiting List: 3-5 years and 1000+ families
• Public Housing Options
Waiting List: 3-7 years and 4500+ families
Other Affordable Housing Options:
Habitat for Humanity:
Similar income guidelines, but families are usually in their homes within
12 months, and the solution to the family’s housing crisis is permanent.
Habitat Family Selection
Income of 30-80% AMI (area-median income)
• Family of four earning between $20,000 - $53,600
Willingness to Partner
• 500 sweat equity hours
• Homeowner education classes

Families are selected for homeownership with Habitat based

Getting Started with Construction
Construction Volunteering
You do not need prior
construction experience.
Build Days:
Wednesday – Saturday year
round
All construction volunteers must
be 16 years of age or older.
Worksite Culture
Be safe and have fun.
Be respectful, courteous, and inclusive.
Support partner families working on site.
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
No inappropriate language.
Alcohol, drugs, smoking,
tobacco, and e-cigarettes are
prohibited.
Observe safety signs and
take precaution on site.
What to Bring and What to Wear
• All construction tools are
provided
• Bring water and snack
• Bring a lunch unless
otherwise advised
• Closed toed shoes / boots
• Long pants (no shorts!)
• Shirt with sleeves
• Appropriate clothes for
both construction work and
rainy weather.

8:45 – 9:00 Arrive and sign in
9:00 – 9:15 Site Orientation
9:15 – 10:30 Work
10:30 – 10:45 Snack Break
10:45 – 12:30 Work
12:30 – 1:00 Lunch Break
1:00 – 2:30 Work
2:30 – 3:30 Clean Up
Using VolunteerUP
• Group volunteers who wish to return to volunteer
later as an individual must complete an online
volunteer profile.
• Online scheduling can be accessed up to one
month in advance.
• If you’re volunteering with a group, make sure
you check the box next to your group name.
