Volcanoes form at plate boundaries and hot spots. The type of eruption depends on the composition of the magma and amount of trapped gases. Shield volcanoes produce basaltic lava flows in quiet eruptions to form wide gentle slopes. Cinder cone volcanoes explosively eject tephra in steep slopes. Composite volcanoes have violent or quiet eruptions of basaltic or granitic lava, forming steep layered slopes. Major examples discussed are Kilauea, Paricutin, Mount St. Helens, Pinatubo, and Krakatau volcanoes.
