WHAT A WORLD 1 READING VOCABULARY- UNIT 17 
Word Expert Cards (Richek & McTague, 2008) 
 There is a list of possible unknown words from Unit 17 below. Divide students 
into groups of 4. 4 students in each group take the responsibility for 
thoroughly learning 5 of the words from the list – then teaching it to peers in 
the group. They can decide who gets which words within the group. 
 Each “word expert” constructs 5 cards by using a teacher-approved dictionary 
and writes definition of the word, part of speech, and an illustration on the 
card. (Make sure that students write down the meaning of the word within the 
sentence in the text.) 
 After a “word expert” is finished with his/her 5 cards, s-he presents his/her 
cards to the peers in the group.

WORD EXPERT 
Cut down the pictures and glue them on the cards according to the meanings of the words. 
Then write the definition of the word, part of speech, and an illustration as in the 
example by using a teacher-approved dictionary. Teach your words to your group 
friends.
