Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant nutrient found in some foods that helps protect cells from free radical damage. It is commonly known as ascorbic acid. Good food sources of vitamin C include oranges, lemons, and limes. A deficiency in vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums, impaired wound healing, excessive bleeding, and scurvy. While vitamin C is water soluble and excess amounts will be excreted, consuming too much can cause bloating and diarrhea.
