Thumbnails are tiny sketches the size of a stamp that are fast, spontaneous, and vague with no details. Roughs are more detailed compositions loosely drawn from thumbnail sketches with no size limit. Roughs are usually hand drawn but scanning a rough sketch into a computer allows for fast and easy changes to be made to colors, typefaces, line weights and images while avoiding the polished look of roughs drawn directly on a computer.
