Prayer
Holy God, you gather the whole universe
into your radiant presence
and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.
Bring healing to all wounds, make whole all
that is broken, speak truth to all illusion,
and shed light in every darkness,
that all creation will see your glory
and know your Christ.
Amen.

John 2
when WINE means MORE

On the third day there was a wedding
in Cana of Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there. Jesus and his
disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine gave
out, the mother of Jesus said to him,
"They have no wine.” And Jesus said
to her, "Dear woman, what concern
is that to you and to me? My hour
has not yet come.” His mother said to
the servants, ”Do whatever he tells
you."
JOHN
2:1-5
Now standing there were six stone
water jars for the Jewish rites of
purification,
each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars
with water." And they filled them
up to the brim. He said to them,
"Now draw some out, and take it
to the chief steward."
So they took it.
JOHN
2:6-8
When the steward tasted the water
that
had become wine, and did not know
where it came from (though the
servants who had drawn the water
knew), the steward called the
bridegroom and said to him,
"Everyone serves the good wine first,
and then the inferior wine after the
guests have become drunk. But you
have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this, the first of his signs,

WHAT
JESUS
REVEALS
In the season of Epiphany,
Jesus’ signs point to God’s glory:
an unusual occurrence, transcending
the common course of nature
God’s magnificence; great beauty;
high renown or honor; the fullness
of God’s attributes, seen most fully
in the crucified Christ
TRANSCENDENCE (BIG)
WHAT
JESUS
REVEALS
In the season of Epiphany,
Jesus’ signs point to God’s glory
TRANSCENDENCE (BIG)
At the wedding, Jesus reveals
God’s heart for the ordinary
people and circumstances
that make up every-day life
immanence (little)
Transcendence is a vertical relationship:
God is on high, I am down here…
God drops in on occasion, but mostly
God is on high, and I am down here.
Immanence means God is inside me…
and speaks to us on a very regular basis.
I don’t want to do “either or”…either
God is wholly other…or entirely inner…
I don’t have the authority to put God
anywhere; what I have is the ability
to recognize that God is everywhere.

Prayer
O God of steadfast love,
at the wedding in Cana
your Son Jesus turned water into wine,
delighting all who were there.
Transform our hearts by your Spirit,
that we may use our varied gifts
to show forth the light of your love
as one body in Christ.
Amen.
