What is WASTEWATER?
Black water
Grey water
The sewage generated on the ship cannot be stored on the
ship for a very long time and it, for this reason, it has to be
discharged into the sea.
Though sewage can be discharged into the sea, ship cannot
discharge it directly overboard as there are some regulations
regarding discharging of sewage that needs to be followed.
Sewage on the sea is generally the waste produced from
toilets, urinals, and scuppers. The rules say that the sewage
can be discharged into the seawater only after it is treated,
and the distance of the ship is less than 3 nautical miles from
the nearest land.
9. 1) The STP consist of four interconnected compartment raw sewage or effluent passes through
bar screen which break into smaller particles and passes through primary compartment
2) When the level in primary compartment rises sufficiently over the flow of the liquid take
place into aeration compartment
3) This compartment contain bacteria which is require oxygen and nutrient to decompose the
waste by aerobic activation
4) The liquid from aeration compartment proceed to settlement compartment where the
activated sludge as it is known settles and leaves a clear effluent. The sludge is continuously
recycled to the aeration
5) The clear affluent discharge from a settlement compartment must be disinfected. Treating
clear effluent with sodium hypochlorite in chlorine compartment
6) Discharge pump pumping automatically overboard when the affluent at
high level float and pump cut when it is at low level float
