Video Games and Violence Speech
B.Z. Smith AP Lang 1 Feb. 2013 Videogames and Violence In today's society, the vast majority of adolescents spend their free time indoors. Many of
those hours are enjoyed playing video games, a habit which teenagers will never hear the end of from their parents. "These games will ruin you", they
say, "It makes you angry and violent", they say, but does it really? Media often portrays videogames as detrimental to mental health, and this topic is
especially scrutinized today because of the sudden popularity of the recent public mass shootings and gun violence; however, past and more recent
studies show that this is absolutely not true. In fact, the positives of gaming seem to massively outweigh the negatives. Lately there has been...show

Even the Supreme Court stands by that knowledge. In 2011 when California decided to ban minors from purchasing games with mature content, the
Supreme Court overruled that decision by 7:2, based on the fact that it violated our first Amendment and that the judges saw no correlation between the
subjects, going so far as to state that the "connection between exposure to violent video games and harmful effects on children do not prove that such
exposure causes minors to act aggressively. Any demonstrated effects are both small and indistinguishable from effects produced by other media."
(Suzy Khimm) In the midst of everything that is happening right now, people need a scapegoat. They need something to take all the blame, and
unfortunately, videogames are just here at the wrong place and the wrong time. CITES 1. Travis, Corte, ed. "Violent Video Games, Blamed For

Do Video Games Cause Bad Behavior Essay
One of today's most debated topics is whether violent video games cause bad behavior. This topic has been researched for almost 30 years and there
are still major opinion differences. Many psychologists say violent video games do cause bad behavior, and claim that games such as Manhunt, Grand
Theft Auto, and Modern Warfare, desensitize people toviolence, making it a norm in society. Others disagree, claiming that these games, although they
can be very violent, can help people develop critical thinking skills. (Nonviolent video games are preferred for this though). The truth is, violent video
games do both; studies indicated that some games increase aggressive thought, feelings and behaviors in both the long and short term. But, studies

aggressive language, and images, have less ability to control their anger, and externalize these things in violent ways.
Violent video games can harm society.
There are many issues when dealing with the two sides of this debate. Those who claim violent video games don't harm society sometimes get their
information from what they believe to be expert advice; many times this advice comes from "experts" hired by media industries. "The media
industries spend so much money on trying to convince the general public that there is nothing to worry about," says Craig Anderson, who was
interviewed on "Violent Video Games and Other Media Violence". "The media industry is very worried about its profits and will do almost anything to
protect them." People should also consider the times a violent video game was just the push some crazy kid needed to kill someone or do something
crazy.

Graphic and Violent video games: Companies should strictly rate and monitor their games
By: Talisa Anderson
Graphic and violent video game companies should strictly rate their video games that are being sold. When teenagers ages 13ā€“18 play these violent
video games that include killing, blood and terrorism, they have less physical activity. The more teenagers that play graphic and violent video games
have more chances to be affected by the violence and mature content. Every time these games are played, the gamers will react more aggressively and
violently toward students at school, siblings and parents. When violent and graphic video games are strictly rated and monitored the positive outcomes
are less mature content, more physical activity and prevents teens from video game related violence.
Strictly rated and monitored graphic and violent video games will prevent the risk of mature content from video games influencing teens. Certain
games like Doom are made to train US military to shoot and kill effectively (Shin,2008). Nevertheless, if teenagers varying from 13 ā€“ 18years old

violent video games sales to prevent violence, aggression, depression and obsession with violent video games. Contact parents, students, teacher to
discuss this issue. We can write letters to our local mayor and even to the prime minister to strictly rate and monitor graphic and violent video games

Do Violent Video Games Create Youth Violence?
Throughout history, the American society has suffered from tragic events, from mass school shootings to civil terrorist attacks. The older generation
has blamed violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto (GTA), Saints Row, and Mafia for the corruption of the youth and their path towardsviolence
. In addition, mass media has also pointed fingers towards the gaming industry for most of these horrific incidents. Furthering the belief that video

Because the sale of video games with violent content have risen through the years, while the rate of crime committed by youths has decline. Along
with that the number of high school students participating in fights has also decline from 43% to 25% within the span of 22 years. Because of violent
video games the younger generation are occupied playing videos games to go commit or participate in any violent crimes.
Violent video games are also used to teach valuable lessons. It allows the youth to experience the consequences of their actions through the virtual
realm. In some sense, it could be compared to a simulator that could predict the most accurate outcome of any situation. In the video game GTA, the
user is allowed to rob corner stores and gas stations, but once the player turns around the store clerk would shoot the player with a shotgun in the back
and if the player was able to get away that person would receive two stars which represent wanted levels, which brought the wraith of the police on the
player, with the player dying as a result. In any violent videos games, there are consequences to your actions with each punishment teaching our youth

Video Games Do Not Encourage Violence Essay
Video games and violence
Over the years, the popularity of computer and video games has grown. Specifically violent video games make up more than 50 % of the top selling
games. These games include violent themes that involve guns, crime, blood, and gore. There is an ongoing belief that these types of games are to
blame for the many acts of violence in society and have encouraged America's youth to act out in aggression. Several organizations, such as the PTC
(Parents Television Council) have moved to discourage the development of violent games while also pushing for stronger regulations when purchasing
such games. There is also debate among parents and concerns on how games can negatively influence their children. So is there a direct link between
video games and violence? The truth is video games do not encourage violence in society based on several factors which include scientific studies,
statistics on crime, and prevention measures adopted by game publishers.
Scientific Studies There have been several scientific studies to determine if video games do in fact contribute to violence. One study was conducted
by experimental psychologist in 2015 at the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University. Lead by Dr. Andy Przybykaski, the study included research
to observe the behaviors of children during social gaming. Dr. Przybykaski also wanted to review the affects gaming had on education performance in
school. One part of the study found that found that children who play

Do Violent Video Games Encourage Violence in Schools ?
The world as we know it today isn't the same as it was ten, twenty or even fifty years ago. We have advanced in so many ways and the progress we
have made over the decades is mainly courtesy of technology. One of the more significant ways in which technology has changed the world today is
with how children spend their free time nowadays. Back in the day, children would go outside to play sports or they would spend time fixing a puzzle.
Today, many children spend their free time on video games. You would think that children usually play age
ā€“appropriate video games. Sadly, that isn't
the case. It is no difficulty for underage children to get their hands on games that are rated mature or for adults only, for example, games that involve
violence. Violent video games have dominated the lives of children to the point where it is thought to be a source of influence in terms of children's
behavior in schools, however, that statement is a common fallacy as studies have shown that there is no correlation between violent behavior and

juvenile violent crimes declined 49.3% in this same period" (Do Violent Video Games Contribute To Youth Violence). In fact, some teenagers say that
such video games help replace their aggression with a happy feeling. Most of the time, teenagers require a platform to express themselves. For
instance, Twitter and Facebook allow people to share feelings and opinions, whether positive or negative. In this case, that's what video games do as

Video Games Cause Violence
Video games have become a major occupation of majority of the youth these days. They spend hours on end concentrating on video games, some of
which are apparently very violent, yet this is actually the whole idea. Coming from the horse's mouth is an argument in support of video games coined
from a video programmer's point of view, stating that violent video games allow people to do what they can not do in realityā€“ virtual reality. ( http:/
/www.theroc.org/rocā€“mag/textarch/rocā€“15/roc15ā€“08.htm ) For instance, someone said to be having a bad day could use a violent video game to

The focus on these games is not only to kill, but also to torture and maim in the process. (http://archive.abcnews.go.com/sections/tech/DailyNews

The story line behind some violent video games includes games in which players earn points by carjacking taxis, scoring drugs from cursing thugs, and
mowing down pedestrians.(see http://www.feedmag.com/vgs/duncan.html>) Some cartoonish tag lines in some sadistic video games include : ā€“ā€“ "As
easy as killing babies with axes" and "More fun than killing your neighbour's cats". This kind of themes definitely influence the players, especially the
younger ones, and inflict violent tendencies on them. It is no wonder, that this killing mania in violent games was seen to seep out into the actual
world when a high school junior opened fire in his school cafetaria in Littleton, Colorado, killing two of his classmates. The gunman was reported to
be an ardent fan of Quake and Doom, some rather violent video games. More proof of the relationship between video games and violence is revealed
by a study which clearly reveals how this kind of entertainment affects our lives. Greater details of the history of how high school students turned
gunmen in Columbine High School are given, which shows that the effect of video games in their lives was a major source of influence in doing what
they did best.
In the light of all these, it is very clear that virtual reality as

Over the past few decades, video games have rapidly evolved from simple games like Pacā€“Man and Tetris to complex interactive media platforms
popular with people of all ages. As video games skyrocketed in popularity, so have public attention and research studies alongside them. The
controversial issue of video games promoting violence or sexual aggression is currently still being hotly debated by educated people from both sides
of the argument. However, there is compelling evidence which proves that themes of violence in video games do indeed affect violent tendencies in the
realā€“world, including but not limited to forms of sexual aggression towards women due to the objectification of female characters in video games.
In Grand Theft Auto V, players are awarded a prostitute's money once they kill her and forced to enact a torture session on someone to extract
information from him; in the Call of Duty Franchise, players are prompted to gun down and bomb innocent civilians. These games are only a few
examples of exposure to violence in a rising media form. Considering that "upward[s] of 90 percent of American children between the ages of 2 and
17 play video and computer games regularly" (Funk, 1993), the high content of violence in video games should be reā€“evaluated. Though not all
violence in video games is depicted seriously, "most of the topā€“selling video games (89%) [contain] violent content" (Knowles et. al, 2001). There have

Do Video Games Lead Violence?
Do Video Games Lead To Violence What happened to riding bikes around the neighborhood? Did the evolution of the technology helped the
society to have a better understanding about each other, or was it the opposite? It has been a queer about it. Since the technology advanced, there
are these video games, which have taken place engaging people on a deeper level causing some advantages and disadvantages in our society.
Playing video games can lead to an aggressive behavior like fighting, bulling or abusing. However, referring to some people, they think that these
video games reflect a big support in children memory that could bring them a bigger vision at school, but not according to Poole. S, who based to
a new research thinks that "Video games will make your kids violent and more likely to fail at school" Web. (2000, Apr 26). There are statistics that
shows how in 1996 the U.S entertainment software industry accounted 2.6 billion on sales and after twenty years later was increased to 11.7 billion
profits. Most of the video games have become so realistic that withdraw people physically and mentally. Therefore, children at young age are more
liable to oppose such aggressive behaviors because of spending at least 13.7 hours a week on the computer or on the play station, playing games. But,
spending a quality time in front of the computer playing harmful games, the National Institute of Mental Health(NIMH) reported that the conscious of

Bloodshed and aggression is everywhere; in magazines, in the shops, on the TV, on websites like YouTube as well as in video games. Yet, why is it
that those video games are assumed to be the biggest media source responsible for the violent outbursts of different individuals? Is this really the case?
Every eight out of ten homes in the United Kingdom own a existing generation games console and video games have become a extraordinary source of

If there were no violent video games, would it just be that people turn to other entertainment mediums such as movies and still cause these brutal
outbursts. They are a runaway train heading on a course of utter brutality and destruction. A study was published in the United States showing that
only 12% of people in a school of misbehaved pupils causing or taking part in aggressive behaviour had an interest in violent video games while
37% "exhibited an interest in their own writings, such as poems, essays or journal entries". In addition to this, the idea of using different media
sources as a scapegoat is not new. In the 1950's comic books were blamed for violence and that was verified not to be the case. So it is the same
story just a different media getting blamed. However, a study was done by the Ohio State University recently to see if playing brutal video games
makes you more aggressive and in turn more violent . One of these groups of test subjects would play nonā€“violent games such as S3K Superbike, Dirt
2 and Pure and at the same time another group would be playing the deemed to be violent video games such as Condemned 2, Call of Duty 4 and
The Club. After they had played these games for 20 minuets they were asked to write an ending for a random story. For example, a driver crashed
into the main characters car and they had to decide what happened next. This happened for a few days before they were asked to play, what they

people think. At the moment teenagers may not see any change in their actions and emotions while playing video games. Violent video games in
specific are a huge impact on Americans teenagers. Do parents actually pay attention to the things their children say while playing violent video

The violence in video games is not always noticeable to most adults or more specifically the "nonā€“gamers". While the graphics in a violent video game
are better and more realistic than a general user video game it's more tempting to play. Teenagers seem to be aggressive already at moments
because of puberty and other teenage life problems, but, there are other reasons they are very aggressive "out of nowhere". The aggression really
comes from the teenagers environment and/or the violence in the video games they play. Kirsh stated that adolescents tend to play violent video
games in their development stage, which could cause them to respond to provocative situations with the greatest aggression. (Kirsh 383) With teens
going through their stages of development they could think that the video games that they're playing frequently are normal ways of life. For
example the actions they see on the violent video games may later be seen be seen as ordinary actions for the adolescent. The teenagers that play the
most violent video games are most likely to be more aggressive. Being in an online lobby on a violent video game there is plenty of verbal
aggression. The amount of explicit language used against players when playing with strangers on violent video games is over the top. Players that use
the explicit language against the players usually believe they

people's lives. With an exceptional number of people in the status quo playing video games, it has raised the question whether or not video games do in
fact incite violence within societies or is it just a coincidence? Throughout this paper, we will explore possible factors that contribute to whether
video games do or do not create violence in society. We will explore this issue through different perspectives to get an overall view on the issue to

Several states, including California, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Washington, have passed laws
regulating the sale of violent or sexually explicit video games (Barrett, 2008). This shows that states are trying to prevent youngsters from buying
rated M games. But attempts to stop it completely show that it could not do so because of a few reasons which include: unnecessarily impeded a
parent 's rights to make decisions about his or her child, was unenforceable, and also was not inclusive enough (Rowland, 2001). Also, stated, is
that there was no evidence to pass legislation regarding 'violent' video games because no evidence presented violent behavior in children. The lack
of direct evidence that connected "point and shoot" video games to violent behavior (Rowland, 2001). Also sales of video games compared to youth
violence (serious violent crime) shows that while the sales of violent video games has gone up, youth violence has gone down (Adam Thierer, 2009).
Relating social media and violence created by video games can be shown as a way to let out stress or to communicate with the community about what

Over the past 20 years, the entertainment industry has become one of the most successful industries around the world and changed the way we
entertain ourselves from different aspects including watching TV and video gaming. However, the people who control the media have started
implementing materials that show violence into all sources of digital entertainment, unaware of its serious psychological effects on youth. Youngsters
are presently effortlessly presented to violence as diversions and consequently now have weapons and explosives comfortable fingertips, and this has
prompted to some horrible results. It is likewise said that youngsters who are presented to violent video games might be at more grave danger.
Nowadays, young teenagers spend more time playing video games and watching movies that show violence, and research on exposure to this type of
entertainment shows that it is linked to positive and negative effects on psychological health. In despite of the high quality entertainment of violent
media, it has many negative consequences that oppose youth natural behavior from different aspects. In other words, teenagers who see many violent
acts are more likely to assume that it is an acceptable behavior even though they come from different backgrounds. As Amialchuk says, '' Early

This growing popularity is generating an increasing concern that these sometimes very graphic videos and life like characters can have a negative

were committed by students who were habitual players of violent video games. Due to these concerns, a nonā€“profit, selfā€“regulatory organization was

General Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: My audiences will stop playing video games long enough not to cause people to exhibit aggressive behavior.
Proposition: We should not play video games for long periods of time in order to avoid addiction and aggression
Introduction: I. Attention Getter: * To start off how many of you guys play video games? (Video) Imagine you're the person playing this videogame.
How do you guys feel after seeing this video? Do you feel angry that your character died? How many times would you play before you give up and
turn off the game? II. Audience Relevance Link: Well it is basic human nature to never give up. Which is also what could lead to addiction and
aggression. When we do not get the things we want in life we as a society tend to get a sour attitude whether it being our dream job or not getting a
good grade on a test. III. Credibility: My brother used to play video games all the time. He would go to bed in the early hours of the morning after

Many people wonder why so many shootings are happening and what those shooters were thinking. People also wonder why the crimes that are

games have been put to blame for school shootings, bullying, and violence towards women. In 2008, ninetyā€“seven percent of twelve to seventeen year
olds in the US played video games, this fueling a 11.7 billion dollars to the domestic video game industry. Also in 2008, ten out of twenty bestā€“selling

Pros And Cons Of Violent Video Games Essay
Violent video game in which humans are being harassed, physically harmed, killed, sexually assaulted, or contain elements of drugs should be
banned for children under the age of 18, because they may increase violent behavior and have a negative impact on their moral development. Also it
impact on their education. Also school environment. Violent video games should be banned for minors especially. video games may provide
relaxation and give a break from studies to the minors, but once it becomes an addiction, the influence it has on an individual may lead them into the
wrong path. When it comes to violent video games, the child is influenced to such an extent that they may be forced into wrongdoings and has a few
too many distractions. Though the parental brought up of the child and their own responsibility as an individual, there are other external, factors like
the society, friends, and also to some extent religion. Addiction also has many drawbacks, once a child is addicted to video games, they would do
anything to get it. Also, there are issues related to health, like eyes sight and hearing. Eyes get spoil staring into the screens for long and hearing skills
become weak as they then get use to listening to the loud gun shots.
There are many things in violent video games which minors should not watch, for example sexuality. It is not something that the parents would want
their teen or child to be looking at in a game. It is their responsibility to stop this from happening by looking at what they are getting for their child.
they should not blindly buy what their child wants. Today world kid are all in the video game they do not care about their education and their future all
they care about is the videos game how to play the game and how eat, also when they do not like someone they want to fight, and sleep when they get
tired. Therefore someone need to banned the violent videos game.if they keep coming out new game that is making the world worser.we need our
greanantion kid bre more smarter.
You no it depends on what age you are because if you're a kid it should be banned because it can lead to a bad future and the person can be tempted to

Persuasive Essay On Video Games And Violence
Video Games and Violence In today's world, one of the big topics is whether video games cause violence. I strongly believe that it isn't the case.
Having been an avid gamer for most of my life and knowing thousands more, I have seen firstā€“hand video games do not cause violence. I know you
don't want to just take my word for it, so I will show you through others as well.
Video games in their entirety do not cause violence. When you look at the games that are out now, most depict events in life past or present. Others
go on a fairy tale ride that most people can discern the difference. One of the biggest games of all time that go on the fairy tale ride is Grand Theft
Auto. GTA has been one of the bestā€“selling and most controversial games ever made Kids from all ages play it with many adults advocating for its
ban. I have played and enjoyed this game myself over the years with friends and random people on the internet. Everyone that I have come across can
always discern the difference between the game and real life. The game itself has a beginning, middle, and end. The main goal is to get to the end.
Sure, you have to do some questionable things along the way but at the end of the day there has been no proof to link this game to the realā€“world
violence and crimes. A study was preformed and written on called Grand Theft Childhood. In this study/book it states that "They found a correlation

Video Games And Violence Speech

  • 1. Video Games and Violence Speech B.Z. Smith AP Lang 1 Feb. 2013 Videogames and Violence In today's society, the vast majority of adolescents spend their free time indoors. Many of those hours are enjoyed playing video games, a habit which teenagers will never hear the end of from their parents. "These games will ruin you", they say, "It makes you angry and violent", they say, but does it really? Media often portrays videogames as detrimental to mental health, and this topic is especially scrutinized today because of the sudden popularity of the recent public mass shootings and gun violence; however, past and more recent studies show that this is absolutely not true. In fact, the positives of gaming seem to massively outweigh the negatives. Lately there has been...show more content... Even the Supreme Court stands by that knowledge. In 2011 when California decided to ban minors from purchasing games with mature content, the Supreme Court overruled that decision by 7:2, based on the fact that it violated our first Amendment and that the judges saw no correlation between the subjects, going so far as to state that the "connection between exposure to violent video games and harmful effects on children do not prove that such exposure causes minors to act aggressively. Any demonstrated effects are both small and indistinguishable from effects produced by other media." (Suzy Khimm) In the midst of everything that is happening right now, people need a scapegoat. They need something to take all the blame, and unfortunately, videogames are just here at the wrong place and the wrong time. CITES 1. Travis, Corte, ed. • 2. Do Video Games Cause Bad Behavior Essay One of today's most debated topics is whether violent video games cause bad behavior. This topic has been researched for almost 30 years and there are still major opinion differences. Many psychologists say violent video games do cause bad behavior, and claim that games such as Manhunt, Grand Theft Auto, and Modern Warfare, desensitize people toviolence, making it a norm in society. Others disagree, claiming that these games, although they can be very violent, can help people develop critical thinking skills. (Nonviolent video games are preferred for this though). The truth is, violent video games do both; studies indicated that some games increase aggressive thought, feelings and behaviors in both the long and short term. But, studies ...show more content... Playing these games will not make them go out and shoot someone, but they use more aggressive language, and images, have less ability to control their anger, and externalize these things in violent ways. Violent video games can harm society. There are many issues when dealing with the two sides of this debate. Those who claim violent video games don't harm society sometimes get their information from what they believe to be expert advice; many times this advice comes from "experts" hired by media industries. "The media industries spend so much money on trying to convince the general public that there is nothing to worry about," says Craig Anderson, who was interviewed on "Violent Video Games and Other Media Violence". "The media industry is very worried about its profits and will do almost anything to protect them." People should also consider the times a violent video game was just the push some crazy kid needed to kill someone or do something crazy. Fourteen year old Stefan Pakreeah was lured to a local park by one of his friends where he was beaten with a hammer and stabbed repeatedly. Pakreeah's parents claim the murderer was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Graphic And Violent Video Games Research Paper Graphic and Violent video games: Companies should strictly rate and monitor their games By: Talisa Anderson Graphic and violent video game companies should strictly rate their video games that are being sold. When teenagers ages 13ā€“18 play these violent video games that include killing, blood and terrorism, they have less physical activity. The more teenagers that play graphic and violent video games have more chances to be affected by the violence and mature content. Every time these games are played, the gamers will react more aggressively and violently toward students at school, siblings and parents. When violent and graphic video games are strictly rated and monitored the positive outcomes are less mature content, more physical activity and prevents teens from video game related violence. Strictly rated and monitored graphic and violent video games will prevent the risk of mature content from video games influencing teens. Certain games like Doom are made to train US military to shoot and kill effectively (Shin,2008). Nevertheless, if teenagers varying from 13 ā€“ 18years old played these...show more content... Together we can rate and monitor the graphic and violent video games sales to prevent violence, aggression, depression and obsession with violent video games. Contact parents, students, teacher to discuss this issue. Throughout history, the American society has suffered from tragic events, from mass school shootings to civil terrorist attacks. The older generation has blamed violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto (GTA), Saints Row, and Mafia for the corruption of the youth and their path towardsviolence . In addition, mass media has also pointed fingers towards the gaming industry for most of these horrific incidents. Furthering the belief that video games are bad for children which is inaccurate. Because the sale of video games with violent content have risen through the years, while the rate of crime committed by youths has decline. Along with that the number of high school students participating in fights has also decline from 43% to 25% within the span of 22 years. Because of violent video games the younger generation are occupied playing videos games to go commit or participate in any violent crimes. Violent video games are also used to teach valuable lessons. It allows the youth to experience the consequences of their actions through the virtual realm. In some sense, it could be compared to a simulator that could predict the most accurate outcome of any situation. In the video game GTA, the user is allowed to rob corner stores and gas stations, but once the player turns around the store clerk would shoot the player with a shotgun in the back and if the player was able to get away that person would receive two stars which represent wanted levels, which brought the wraith of the police on the player, with the player dying as a result. • 5. Video Games Do Not Encourage Violence Essay Video games and violence Over the years, the popularity of computer and video games has grown. Specifically violent video games make up more than 50 % of the top selling games. These games include violent themes that involve guns, crime, blood, and gore. There is an ongoing belief that these types of games are to blame for the many acts of violence in society and have encouraged America's youth to act out in aggression. Several organizations, such as the PTC (Parents Television Council) have moved to discourage the development of violent games while also pushing for stronger regulations when purchasing such games. There is also debate among parents and concerns on how games can negatively influence their children. So is there a direct link between video games and violence? The truth is video games do not encourage violence in society based on several factors which include scientific studies, statistics on crime, and prevention measures adopted by game publishers. Scientific Studies There have been several scientific studies to determine if video games do in fact contribute to violence. One study was conducted by experimental psychologist in 2015 at the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University. Lead by Dr. Andy Przybykaski, the study included research to observe the behaviors of children during social gaming. Dr. Przybykaski also wanted to review the affects gaming had on education performance in school. One part of the study found that found that children who play Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Do Violent Video Games Encourage Violence Essay Do Violent Video Games Encourage Violence in Schools ? The world as we know it today isn't the same as it was ten, twenty or even fifty years ago. We have advanced in so many ways and the progress we have made over the decades is mainly courtesy of technology. One of the more significant ways in which technology has changed the world today is with how children spend their free time nowadays. Back in the day, children would go outside to play sports or they would spend time fixing a puzzle. Today, many children spend their free time on video games. You would think that children usually play age ā€“appropriate video games. Sadly, that isn't the case. It is no difficulty for underage children to get their hands on games that are rated mature or for adults only, for example, games that involve violence. Violent video games have dominated the lives of children to the point where it is thought to be a source of influence in terms of children's behavior in schools, however, that statement is a common fallacy as studies have shown that there is no correlation between violent behavior and playing video games....show more content... In fact, some teenagers say that such video games help replace their aggression with a happy feeling. Most of the time, teenagers require a platform to express themselves. For instance, Twitter and Facebook allow people to share feelings and opinions, whether positive or negative. In this case, that's what video games do as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Video Games Cause Violence Essay Video Games Cause Violence Video games have become a major occupation of majority of the youth these days. They spend hours on end concentrating on video games, some of which are apparently very violent, yet this is actually the whole idea. Coming from the horse's mouth is an argument in support of video games coined from a video programmer's point of view, stating that violent video games allow people to do what they can not do in realityā€“ virtual reality. ( http:/ /www.theroc.org/rocā€“mag/textarch/rocā€“15/roc15ā€“08.htm ) For instance, someone said to be having a bad day could use a violent video game to release stress by shooting down a couple hundred bad men than actually taking an AKā€“47 and spilling down a few brains down the...show more content... The focus on these games is not only to kill, but also to torture and maim in the process. (http://archive.abcnews.go.com/sections/tech/DailyNews /internetgames981201.html) The story line behind some violent video games includes games in which players earn points by carjacking taxis, scoring drugs from cursing thugs, and mowing down pedestrians.(see http://www.feedmag.com/vgs/duncan.html>) Some cartoonish tag lines in some sadistic video games include : ā€“ā€“ "As easy as killing babies with axes" and "More fun than killing your neighbour's cats". This kind of themes definitely influence the players, especially the younger ones, and inflict violent tendencies on them. It is no wonder, that this killing mania in violent games was seen to seep out into the actual world when a high school junior opened fire in his school cafetaria in Littleton, Colorado, killing two of his classmates. The gunman was reported to be an ardent fan of Quake and Doom, some rather violent video games. More proof of the relationship between video games and violence is revealed by a study which clearly reveals how this kind of entertainment affects our lives. Greater details of the history of how high school students turned gunmen in Columbine High School are given, which shows that the effect of video games in their lives was a major source of influence in doing what they did best. • 8. Over the past few decades, video games have rapidly evolved from simple games like Pacā€“Man and Tetris to complex interactive media platforms popular with people of all ages. As video games skyrocketed in popularity, so have public attention and research studies alongside them. The controversial issue of video games promoting violence or sexual aggression is currently still being hotly debated by educated people from both sides of the argument. However, there is compelling evidence which proves that themes of violence in video games do indeed affect violent tendencies in the realā€“world, including but not limited to forms of sexual aggression towards women due to the objectification of female characters in video games. In Grand Theft Auto V, players are awarded a prostitute's money once they kill her and forced to enact a torture session on someone to extract information from him; in the Call of Duty Franchise, players are prompted to gun down and bomb innocent civilians. These games are only a few examples of exposure to violence in a rising media form. Considering that "upward[s] of 90 percent of American children between the ages of 2 and 17 play video and computer games regularly" (Funk, 1993), the high content of violence in video games should be reā€“evaluated. Though not all violence in video games is depicted seriously, "most of the topā€“selling video games (89%) [contain] violent content" (Knowles et. al, 2001). • 9. Do Video Games Lead Violence? Do Video Games Lead To Violence What happened to riding bikes around the neighborhood? Did the evolution of the technology helped the society to have a better understanding about each other, or was it the opposite? It has been a queer about it. Since the technology advanced, there are these video games, which have taken place engaging people on a deeper level causing some advantages and disadvantages in our society. Playing video games can lead to an aggressive behavior like fighting, bulling or abusing. However, referring to some people, they think that these video games reflect a big support in children memory that could bring them a bigger vision at school, but not according to Poole. S, who based to a new research thinks that "Video games will make your kids violent and more likely to fail at school" Web. (2000, Apr 26). There are statistics that shows how in 1996 the U.S entertainment software industry accounted 2.6 billion on sales and after twenty years later was increased to 11.7 billion profits. Most of the video games have become so realistic that withdraw people physically and mentally. Therefore, children at young age are more liable to oppose such aggressive behaviors because of spending at least 13.7 hours a week on the computer or on the play station, playing games. • 10. Essay on Violent Video Games Cause Violence? Bloodshed and aggression is everywhere; in magazines, in the shops, on the TV, on websites like YouTube as well as in video games. Yet, why is it that those video games are assumed to be the biggest media source responsible for the violent outbursts of different individuals? Is this really the case? Every eight out of ten homes in the United Kingdom own a existing generation games console and video games have become a extraordinary source of education when helping kids to learn, such websites like educationcity.com or the VTech Learning System that teach kids literacy, numeracy and the sciences through their games. If there were no violent video games, would it just be that people turn to other entertainment mediums such as movies and still cause these brutal outbursts. They are a runaway train heading on a course of utter brutality and destruction. A study was published in the United States showing that only 12% of people in a school of misbehaved pupils causing or taking part in aggressive behaviour had an interest in violent video games while 37% "exhibited an interest in their own writings, such as poems, essays or journal entries". In addition to this, the idea of using different media sources as a scapegoat is not new. In the 1950's comic books were blamed for violence and that was verified not to be the case. So it is the same story just a different media getting blamed. However, a study was done by the Ohio State University recently to see if playing brutal video games makes you more aggressive and in turn more violent . One of these groups of test subjects would play nonā€“violent games such as S3K Superbike, Dirt 2 and Pure and at the same time another group would be playing the deemed to be violent video games such as Condemned 2, Call of Duty 4 and The Club. After they had played these games for 20 minuets they were asked to write an ending for a random story. For example, a driver crashed into the main characters car and they had to decide what happened next. Though some say "it's just a game", that simple game could be more of an impact than people think. At the moment teenagers may not see any change in their actions and emotions while playing video games. Violent video games in specific are a huge impact on Americans teenagers. Do parents actually pay attention to the things their children say while playing violent video games? No. Violent video games affect a great amount of America's teenagers, it causes hostility, aggression and affects school performance. The violence in video games is not always noticeable to most adults or more specifically the "nonā€“gamers". While the graphics in a violent video game are better and more realistic than a general user video game it's more tempting to play. Teenagers seem to be aggressive already at moments because of puberty and other teenage life problems, but, there are other reasons they are very aggressive "out of nowhere". The aggression really comes from the teenagers environment and/or the violence in the video games they play. Kirsh stated that adolescents tend to play violent video games in their development stage, which could cause them to respond to provocative situations with the greatest aggression. (Kirsh 383) With teens going through their stages of development they could think that the video games that they're playing frequently are normal ways of life. For example the actions they see on the violent video games may later be seen be seen as ordinary actions for the adolescent. The teenagers that play the most violent video games are most likely to be more aggressive. Being in an online lobby on a violent video game there is plenty of verbal aggression. Video games are a significant part of many young people's lives. With an exceptional number of people in the status quo playing video games, it has raised the question whether or not video games do in fact incite violence within societies or is it just a coincidence? Throughout this paper, we will explore possible factors that contribute to whether video games do or do not create violence in society. We will explore this issue through different perspectives to get an overall view on the issue to find a solution. But attempts to stop it completely show that it could not do so because of a few reasons which include: unnecessarily impeded a parent 's rights to make decisions about his or her child, was unenforceable, and also was not inclusive enough (Rowland, 2001). Also, stated, is that there was no evidence to pass legislation regarding 'violent' video games because no evidence presented violent behavior in children. The lack of direct evidence that connected "point and shoot" video games to violent behavior (Rowland, 2001). Also sales of video games compared to youth violence (serious violent crime) shows that while the sales of violent video games has gone up, youth violence has gone down (Adam Thierer, 2009). Relating social media and violence created by video games can be shown as a way to let out stress or to communicate with the community about what games are trending or not. Young people are always going to be on social media whether they like it or not. The youtube community allows for people of all ages to interact, bringing into question whether video games incite violence or rather bring people together through Get more content on HelpWriting.net
