18. Procedure:
1. Using the scissor, cut the ¼
sheet of paper into smaller pieces.
Observe what happens.
2. Lit up the match. Observe what
happens.
19. Questions:
Q1. What is your observation of the
paper before you cut it?
Q2. What is the size of the paper
before, during and after you cut it?
Q3. What is your observation of the
match before you lit it?
Q4. What is the color of the match
before, during and after you lit it?
21. Physical change
A physical change alters the form of a
substance, but does not change it to another
substance.
It changes shape or size.
It dissolves.
It changes phase (freezes,
boils, evaporates, condenses)
Example:
Making Orange Juice
22. Physical changes occur when matter
changes its property but not its chemical
nature.
Physical property changes could include a
change in: texture, shape, size, color, odor,
volume, mass, weight, and density.
29. Chemical Change
Chemical changes are changes matter
undergoes when it becomes new or different
matter.
It burns.
Temperature changes without heating/cooling.
It bubbles (makes a gas).
It changes color.
It forms a precipitate.
30. When a substance undergoes a chemical
change, it is changed into a different
substance with different properties.
To identify a chemical change look for signs
such as color change, bubbling and fizzing,
light production, smoke, and presence of
heat.
Example:
Baking a Cake
31. If a chemical reaction requires
thermal energy before it can
occur, then you say that the
reaction is endothermic
reactions.
However, chemical reactions
that produce heat and release it
to the surroundings are called
exothermic reactions.
32.
33. Signs of a Chemical Change
1. Precipitation
2. Color Change
35. Sugar dissolving in tea
Examples for Chemical Change
Logs burning
Breaking water
up by separating
it into hydrogen
and oxygen
36. A chemical change occurs when fireworks are
used. Fireworks are made of metals such as
magnesium and copper. These change
chemically as they light up the sky.
42. Tell Me How!
Write one paragraph about the difference
between a physical and chemical change.
Give a drawing example of each.
43. 1. Fireworks exploding in the sky.
2. Slicing onions
3. Melting of ice candy
4. Corroding of metal
5. Baking a cake
Direction: Identify the following changes of
matter. Write PC for Physical Change and CC
for Chemical Change. Write your answers on a
¼ sheet of paper.
