The high priest of Israel wore special sacred vestments when serving in the tabernacle or temple. His clothing included an ephod made of gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarn as well as a breastpiece containing twelve precious stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. A gold plate was also worn on his forehead with the words "Holy to Yahweh" engraved on it.
