1. Petabyte-scale storage needs are growing rapidly, from 161 exabytes in 2006 to an estimated 988 exabytes in 2010. 2. One solution is an "Open Storage Pod" architecture using smaller, lower-power 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch hard disks to build scalable petabyte-scale storage with lower total cost of ownership than traditional solutions. 3. The modular "pod" architecture allows building scalable storage from the rack level up to a container level with 9.6 petabytes of storage using 9,600 disks while maintaining a efficient power usage.
