This document discusses the Christian doctrine of Christology, focusing on Jesus Christ's person and work. It examines his full deity and full humanity, known as the Hypostatic Union, where he is 100% God and 100% man. It also explores his sinless life, vicarious death, bodily resurrection, and the virgin birth, emphasizing that Mary conceived Jesus as a virgin through the Holy Spirit according to biblical prophecies. Key passages from Matthew and Luke regarding the virgin birth are analyzed. The importance of the virgin birth for uniting Christ's divine and human natures without inherited sin is explained.

Bible Alive Jesus Christ 001: "“The Method of Biblical Christology”BibleAlive
Discover what Christology is and its relevance. Learn to properly distinguish between the Jesus of Faith and the Jesus of history. Become cautious of the pitfalls of rationalism as seen in biblical skepticism and religious fundamentalism. In this class we critique the “Quests for the Historical Jesus.” Learn about the “Old Quest” and why it failed, and also explore “the New Quest” and “the Third Quest.” See the Theological History of Jesus and learn that the Gospels are not biographies but rather inspired witnesses to the “events and teachings of Jesus insofar as they have meaning for the Church.” Most importantly, learn the right orientation for confronting the mystery of Jesus Christ.

This is a study of Jesus being unique. He is one of a kind among all religious leaders in history, and one of a kind in many different ways covered in this study.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

8. Hypostatic Union
(Two natures / one person)
• Q: How much of Jesus Christ is God?
• A: 100%
• Q: How much of Jesus Christ is man?
• A: 100%
9. The Work of Christ
Sinless Life Vicarious Death
(substitutionary)
Bodily Resurrection
10. THE VIRGIN BIRTH
• Strictly speaking, the term “virgin birth” is a
misnomer. The term should be “virginal
conception.”
• The doctrine affirms that Jesus was born as
other men are, but denies that He was
conceived as other men are.
• There is no parallel in the non-Christian
religions (pagan stories—cohabitation of a
god with a human being)
11. CHRISTIANITY TODAY
(SEPT. 11, 1970)
• Who does NOT believe in the virgin birth?
• 60% of Methodists
• 49% of Presbyterians
• 44% of Episcopalians
• 34% of American Baptists
• 19% of American Lutherans
12. Three (3) Key Biblical Texts that
speak of the Virgin Birth:
1 Isaiah 7:14:
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you
a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive
and bear a Son, and shall call His name
Immanuel.”
2 Matthew 1:18-25
3 Luke 1:26-38
(Other texts allude to virgin birth; Gal.4:4)
13. Matthew Teaches Us:
1. Joseph was in no way involved in the
conception of Jesus (25).
2. Joseph did have normal relations with
her afterwards (25).
3. He was responsible for naming the child
(25).
4. All of this was a fulfillment of the Virgin
Birth prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 (vv.22-23).
5. The name Immanuel (“God with us”) is
significant because it reminds us that
Jesus is 100% God and 100% man.
14. Luke Emphasizes:
1. That Mary is a virgin. Matthew also has this
emphasis (26-27).
2. That the entire complex of events was a
surprise (29-30).
3. The divine agency of the Holy Spirit. This
point is again not ignored in Matthew, but is
given greater attention in verse 35.
4. That the virgin birth is impossible apart from a
divine miracle (37).
5. The miracle of recognition by Elizabeth and
John (39-44).
15. Why the Virgin Birth Matters
(Wayne Grudem)
• The virgin birth made possible the uniting of
full deity and full humanity in one person.
• The virgin birth also makes possible Christ’s
true humanity without inherited sin.
• Jesus did not descend from Adam in exactly
the same way in which every other human
being has descended. This helps to understand
why the legal guilt and moral corruption that
belongs to all other human beings did not
belong to Christ.
16. A Hymn by John Newton
1. O LORD, from Whom there’s nought concealed,
Who sees my inward frame; to Thee I always stand
revealed exactly as I am!
2. Since I, at times, can hardly bear what in myself I
see; how vile and foul must I appear, most holy God
to Thee!
3. But since my Saviour stands between, Who shed His
precious blood, ‘tis He, instead of me is seen, when
I approach to God.
17. 4. Thus, though a sinner, I am safe: He pleads before
the throne His life and death on my behalf, and
calls my sins His own.
5. What wondrous love, what mysteries, in this
appointment shine! My breaches of the law are His,
and His obedience mine.
