Alessandro Carboni is choreographer, performer and researcher whose projects explore the complex relationships between body, map and city. Merging Traditional "Uli" Painting Techniques/Symbols and Computer Graphics
For many in the South Eastern part of Nigeria, Digital Art is rapidly becoming the preferred medium to produce poster designs and digital paintings. With a mouse, appropriate software and hardware, monitor, a scanner and a laser printer, one can control a project from start to finish. Traditional “Uli” Body Painting techniques/symbols at the same time, are visual media, which the writer describes as static media (i.e. it can only show snapshots), but it can be enhanced by stylistic elements of a metalanguage to produce the visual impression of dynamics. The viewer's imagination is asked to interpret these symbols and to change the meaning of objects actually shown. “Uli” is an expression of the Ibo people’s capacity for creative body design, which is firmly rooted in their myths and their experience of life in the past, present and future. At its best, it is an expression of their synthetic present, the epic of their search for a new order in the contemporary world. Unfortunately, the “Uli” Traditional Body Painting technique is gradually fading away, as well as the use of the Uli symbols. The emphasis of this paper is to identify the advantages in merging the use of Digital Arts and “Uli” Traditional Body Painting techniques/symbols in producing social awareness themed painting/poster designs and sculptural pieces in Nigeria, with particular reference to the Ibo people of the South Eastern Region of Nigeria. This way, the poster/painting will not just serve as a communicative medium but also as a work of Art (in terms of its aesthetic qualities) and the Uli symbols can as well be preserved.

The viewer's imagination is asked to interpret these symbols and to change the meaning of objects actually shown. “Uli” is an expression of the Ibo people’s capacity for creative body design, which is firmly rooted in their myths and their experience of life in the past, present and future. At its best, it is an expression of their synthetic present, the epic of their search for a new order in the contemporary world. Unfortunately, the “Uli” Traditional Body Painting technique is gradually fading away, as well as the use of the Uli symbols. The emphasis of this paper is to identify the advantages in merging the use of Digital Arts and “Uli” Traditional Body Painting techniques/symbols in producing social awareness themed painting/poster designs and sculptural pieces in Nigeria, with particular reference to the Ibo people of the South Eastern Region of Nigeria. This way, the poster/painting will not just serve as a communicative medium but also as a work of Art (in terms of its aesthetic qualities) and the Uli symbols can as well be preserved.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is

- 1. Vapaatila - Informal Spaces A Cross Cultural Project Jukka Orava
- 2. ‘ Digital technology has made us “global citizens” with skills and the tools to effectively communicate. Insular cultural boundaries are being replaced by a developing sense of multiculturalism. These creative and challenging workshops provided a meaning and function for the arts in a multicultural context. More than anything else the pupils learnt that education can be liberating and that the processes associated with art practice are more than just making. The experience was memorable, empowering and supported a real sense of empathy in these informal spaces’. Jukka Orava
- 26. The upper secondary group studied ’space and environment’ by using video. Crucial areas were elements that constructed the space: light, shadows, reflections, sound etc. Two groups were created, one for a sound workshop and the other for an image workshop. A film was created called ”Shadows”. The sound group produced presentations, which were performed as performances during the project week.

- 29. In the image manipulation workshop students worked with their own ’free space’ images. They used black and white photocopies of their original images.
- 30. Programmes: PaintShop Pro –Animation Shop. The topic was an ’event in a situation’. Space and situation was selected from their own images. The starting point was to study the spirit of the moment including the temporal and functional dimensions.
- 33. The performance and installation workshop studied the phenomenas in contemporary art. Visit to Kiasma - Workshop produced an ” accidential haiku ” piece. The Group wrote haiku poems and hid them in public spaces in Helsinki. ACCIDENTIAL HAIKU
