In November 2007, Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant, died after being tasered by RCMP officers at Vancouver Airport. Dziekanski had become distressed after a long delay and was unable to communicate in English. Video footage showed the RCMP tasering him within 25 seconds of arriving and him screaming in pain. An autopsy found no drugs or alcohol but could not determine the cause of death. The video sparked public outrage and inquiries revealed that the RCMP had lied repeatedly about the incident. Lawsuits were filed and apologies given, but it took years to get accountability for the man's death.
