This year marks the 69th Independence Day of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the Indian flag at Red Fort in New Delhi and 21 gun shots will be fired. Independence Day is one of three national holidays in India, along with Republic Day and Gandhi's birthday, and is observed nationwide. After 200 years of British rule over India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed independence on August 15, 1947 in his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech.
