Fawkes was born and educated in York, England. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried a Catholic man. Fawkes later converted to Catholicism himself and planned to assassinate King James I by blowing up Westminster Palace in 1605. However, he was captured, tortured, and hanged for treason. His image is now used as a symbol of protest around the world.
