Utility Design and Coordination Services
Provided by: Lynée Russell, Utility Coordination Manager
Anybody associated with civil engineering would likely vouch that while identifying layers of
details may seem unnecessary, it is crucial to implement proper utility design and coordination—
the foundation of a successful residential, commercial, transportation or government project.
Insight, LLC provides utility design and coordination services that are usually left up to the
general contractor or client during construction. Our in-house team of utility specialists allows us
to provide our clients with money-saving quick response times while also helping to avoid
setbacks.
Any given project could potentially yield a variety of obstructions, such as telephone lines,
electricity distribution, natural gas, cable television, fiber optics, traffic lights and streetlights. In
some locations, major oil and gas pipelines, as well as communication and electric distribution
lines also act as possible hazards.
Utility design and coordination starts with extensive site research and surveying, in which utility
locations and potential conflicts are identified. The utility coordinator will then obtain any
applicable electric and gas loads, as well as telecomm requirements for new service,
relocations and disconnects. As a team effort, the utility coordinator will determine the best
relocation choices and new service routing with civil engineers, making sure that site plan sheets
depict this information.
Submission of loads, plans and design requests are then submitted to dry utility companies for
review and processing. The utility coordinator is tasked with tracking and coordinating all design
requirements/requests (i.e., best conduit design routes/plans, system and equipment
requirements and associated costs) from the appropriate utility companies, which allows both
clients and civil engineers the opportunity to review the information to ensure that the utilities’
design stays within the parameters of the project.
Once utility design/requirements have been established and approved, utility coordinators pull
all applicable final drawings and contracts for client signature and payment processing.
Applicable easement coordination will also be handled during this phase.
The utility coordinator maintains continual contact with utility companies, municipalities, client,
MEP, architect, civil engineer and client attorneys throughout the entire process to ensure the
integrities of pre-established time frames and designs are upheld throughout the design process,
through the on-site construction until the site opening.
Utility coordinators are relied upon for their key understanding of the complete scope of work by
engineers, who often find that attention is spread across multiple aspects of the entire site
project.
Insight’s utility coordination is a fundamental service that, when integrated into the initial project
planning stage and throughout the design phases, can be a significant benefit by saving time
and money.
For more information utility coordination and the array of additional utility services that our
company offers (such as surveying/designating/SWM maintenance, etc), please contact Lynée
Russell at Insight.
Sincerely,
Lynée Russell | Utility Coordination Manager
