Using the Arts to Promote Social and
Emotional Learning
The necessity for children to have ongoing, pleasant interactions with instructors and their
classmates, purposeful assignments and activities that allow them to discover and express
their individuality, and creative outlets to expand their knowledge has grown more and more
obvious over time.
The arts can help with this. In the classroom, primary kids may develop their social and
emotional abilities in a variety of imaginative and enjoyable ways through the arts.

THE COMMUNITY THE ARTS BUILD
Children will feel out of place if your pupils don't feel like a community and won't work
effectively together. Due of a lack of safety, they won't want to take chances. A sense of
community is necessary for a positive learning environment.
People may connect over artistic endeavors, so it's always a good idea to foster a sense of
community in the classroom.
Giving children the time and space to discuss and exchange works of art may be a
wonderful exercise for fostering a sense of community. As a class as well as in a small group
or pair share, students can talk about and reflect on their own work as well as the work of
others, music preferences, or a favorite movie.
Make sure you provide enough time for a conversation so that students may draw
comparisons between their shared and unique experiences. This is an excellent chance to
teach children how to interact with one another and have courteous conversations.
Playing instruments can help children bond since it allows them to generate noises and
melodies together. Have a drumming circle for this exercise to foster a sense of community.
Simply gather a few inexpensive percussion instruments or other items that children may
use to create percussion sounds (they can even use body percussion such as clapping,
tapping, etc.), begin a steady rhythm, and layer the sounds in. Each person in the circle is
able to speak.
A drumming circle fosters a wide range of social skills. As kids listen to others and then
locate their own location among the noises, their communication abilities advance. There
could even be some new musical leaders. In order to keep the music flowing, cooperation is
required. Your class will get closer if everyone smiles and laughs.

ARTS CAN SUPPORT SELF-AWARENESS
In addition to uniting people, the arts may assist students in finding quiet, contemplative time
to think on themselves. Self-awareness is a difficult concept for many students to grasp, thus
it might be crucial for teachers to help pupils develop it in a secure learning environment.
Throughout the school year, a variety of emotions may manifest, and it is crucial that we
assist our pupils in processing them.
Doodles and recurring patterns: Never undervalue the power of a doodle. Drawing easy,
routine patterns helps calm the mind and aid with self-control. On occasion, I really advise
my pupils to sketch a border around a piece of paper before they begin or when they are
finished. Even content-related doodles like the repeating math symbols drawn around a
math worksheet fall under this category.
In the sporadic two to three minutes you might have left over at the end of class, you can
also demonstrate this to your students and then watch to see where they go with it. Give
them the chance to sketch a design on the corner of their planner or notepad using repeated
lines or waves to see what patterns come out.
Poems and monologues: One excellent method to help kids become more self-aware is to
have them create a poem or a monologue about and for themselves. With the help of these
two potent instruments, students may explore their passions, attributes, and feelings while
also revealing a little piece of themselves to their peers.
An example of a prompt would be:
Write a haiku (or other type of poem) that encapsulates your preferred pastime.
Describe why ____ (family, having friends, your pet, pizza, etc.) is so important to you in a
monologue.
DEEP LEARNING OF CONTENT, INCLUDING SELF, IS MADE
POSSIBLE BY THE ARTS
Naturally, as instructors, ensuring that pupils comprehend the material in our curriculum is
our first concern. And if pupils are struggling, it is our duty to come up with fresh methods
and instruments to aid in their understanding.
Your kids will retain and comprehend the material you teach (regardless of the subject or
grade) considerably better if you incorporate the arts. It's fantastic that you can incorporate
social and emotional intelligence into this task.
Dramatization: When students play out a scene from a tale, they not only analyze the
storyline in more detail, but they are also better able to put themselves in the characters'
shoes and comprehend their feelings, ideas, and motivations.
It's a terrific technique to help children comprehend and develop empathy to bring this up
while they prepare for and perform the play.
History and music: Music has always done a great job of capturing the eras in which it was
created. The next time you lecture about a particular historical occasion or time period, think
about including some of the music that was popular at the time.
Students can gain a fresh perspective on the human aspect of what was happening by
having the chance to investigate the music and the musicians who made it. Consider the
Civil War or the 1960s, for instance. The use of that music was essential in conveying the
emotions of the characters and can spark fascinating debates that encourage in-depth study.
For many instructors, discovering genuine and innovative methods to include the arts and
SEL into your classroom may alter the game. You may have your children develop their
social and emotional learning right in your classroom with a few changes and easy activity
ideas.
