Terraform is a well known Infrastructure as Code tool. It is ideal for managing cloud infrastructure at AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. However, thanks to a provider model, Terraform can talk to many more services. In this presentation, the basic working principles of Terraform are briefly reviewed. The speaker will also share some important lessons he has learned from using Terraform for more than three years.

Serverless Logging Architecture
This document describes building a serverless log analytics platform. It discusses the challenges with conventional logging architectures that require managing servers and have scalability issues. The document then introduces a serverless approach using AWS services like Kinesis, S3, Elasticsearch, and Kibana that allows logging infrastructure to scale infinitely with no server management. Code examples show how to set up logging pipelines to stream logs in real time to storage and analytics using this serverless architecture.

Our company has a large codebase split across many Git repositories that are reviewed using Gerrit. Gerrit allows grouping related code changes across different projects into topics but does not support checking out topics from the repo or running continuous integration feedback on all commits in a topic. To address this, a workflow was created using Gerrit topics and AWS Lambda to automatically run CI tests on all commits in a topic.

London Borough of Harrow - Deliver GI with speed and efficiency
At Esri UK Annual Conference 2014
At Harrow Council GI focused projects are being more of the norm. In this example there were two departments trying to create a spatial database of council land ownership in Harrow, but problems were forecast. Which one would be the definitive layer? The two data sources would benefit each other so the projects were combined so that just one dataset was created. The problem was that users wanted to be able to have a record of land ownership and associate a large number of attributes with it. All this without the paper files and manual searching of the current process.
A GIS based solution was proposed, utilising the Flex API intranet platform previously custom built by Harrow. This allowed quick development time and simple integration. The overall outcome of the deeds project was the smooth transition from a laborious paper based system with no mapping to an intuitive, simple to use mapping system that answered questions in significantly quicker times, gave multiple users access and brought together two datasets into one.
MongoDB and the Future of Workspaces
R/GA is a global design and innovation consultancy that developed a connected workspace platform to improve productivity, collaboration, and engagement for employees. The platform collects data from various sources and integrates with other systems. It uses MongoDB due to its flexibility to handle different data types, fine-grained access controls, and ability to scale. Pinterest is a visual discovery engine that helps more than 250 million monthly active users discover things they love and inspires them to go do those things in their daily lives. Creating Pinterest's new stream processing platform, Xenon, around Flink has enabled teams across the company to tackle new real-time applications. From accelerating machine learning model training iterations to enabling real-time analytics, real-time stream processing has opened up new possibilities everywhere. Given that we ingest over a trillion messages every day through Kafka at Pinterest, a lot went into the design of our new stream processing platform.
We would like to share our experience in making the decision to move from different streaming technologies to Flink. We also discuss how we are building a self-service streaming platform for our engineers, data analysts and data scientists that provides a seamless job deployment pipeline, common monitoring, alerting and tooling. We have also enabled ad-hoc Flink SQL queries on bounded Kafka data streams through a UI to help users explore streaming data easily, extract real-time insights and assist product development.

There are many tools and possibilities available in the Icinga monitoring ecosystem. Setup Icinga 2 within a distributed architecture, put Icinga Web 2 on top and visualise alerts. Further you’ve already setup your preferred graphing solution (Graphite, InfluxDB, etc.) and Grafana greets you with a shiny metrics dashboard. Log events are processed and Elastic Stack or Graylog add more possibilities to correlate them with monitoring alerts.
Having so many tools requires you to know how to connect them, or simply integrate an existing data source or frontend into your all-in-one user dashboard. Be it Graphs in your detail view, additional log events on a critical service view or yet a global map for location based alerts. Maybe you’ll also want to provide as much details in your notifications as possible, think of fancy Grafana graphs.
This talk dives into existing and possible integrations, and explains why you sometimes just write your own integration. Carsten is the author of the Icinga Web 2 Grafana module while Michael focusses on Dashing and log processing. We’ll catch up with war stories (“meh, nothing exists”) to hero stories (“hooray, users love my integration”) and hope to motivate everyone out there doing the same. We will continue with practical development on Friday during the OSMC hackathon.

The problem was that users wanted to be able to have a record of land ownership and associate a large number of attributes with it. All this without the paper files and manual searching of the current process.
A GIS based solution was proposed, utilising the Flex API intranet platform previously custom built by Harrow. This allowed quick development time and simple integration. The overall outcome of the deeds project was the smooth transition from a laborious paper based system with no mapping to an intuitive, simple to use mapping system that answered questions in significantly quicker times, gave multiple users access and brought together two datasets into one.

The platform collects data from various sources and integrates with other systems. It uses MongoDB due to its flexibility to handle different data types, fine-grained access controls, and ability to scale. Managing MongoDB infrastructure was challenging, so R/GA plans to move to MongoDB Atlas for simplified management and enhanced features.

Pinterest is a visual discovery engine that helps more than 250 million monthly active users discover things they love and inspires them to go do those things in their daily lives. Creating Pinterest's new stream processing platform, Xenon, around Flink has enabled teams across the company to tackle new real-time applications. From accelerating machine learning model training iterations to enabling real-time analytics, real-time stream processing has opened up new possibilities everywhere. Given that we ingest over a trillion messages every day through Kafka at Pinterest, a lot went into the design of our new stream processing platform.
We would like to share our experience in making the decision to move from different streaming technologies to Flink. We also discuss how we are building a self-service streaming platform for our engineers, data analysts and data scientists that provides a seamless job deployment pipeline, common monitoring, alerting and tooling. We have also enabled ad-hoc Flink SQL queries on bounded Kafka data streams through a UI to help users explore streaming data easily, extract real-time insights and assist product development.

There are many tools and possibilities available in the Icinga monitoring ecosystem. Setup Icinga 2 within a distributed architecture, put Icinga Web 2 on top and visualise alerts. Further you’ve already setup your preferred graphing solution (Graphite, InfluxDB, etc.) and Grafana greets you with a shiny metrics dashboard. Log events are processed and Elastic Stack or Graylog add more possibilities to correlate them with monitoring alerts.
Having so many tools requires you to know how to connect them, or simply integrate an existing data source or frontend into your all-in-one user dashboard. Be it Graphs in your detail view, additional log events on a critical service view or yet a global map for location based alerts. Maybe you’ll also want to provide as much details in your notifications as possible, think of fancy Grafana graphs.
This talk dives into existing and possible integrations, and explains why you sometimes just write your own integration. Carsten is the author of the Icinga Web 2 Grafana module while Michael focusses on Dashing and log processing. We’ll catch up with war stories (“meh, nothing exists”) to hero stories (“hooray, users love my integration”) and hope to motivate everyone out there doing the same. We will continue with practical development on Friday during the OSMC hackathon.

DevSecCon London 2018: Is your supply chain your achille's heel
COLIN DOMONEY
The advent of DevOps and large scale automation of software construction and delivery has elevated the software supply chain – and its underpinning delivery pipeline – to mission critical status in any modern enterprise. The increased velocity of modern pipelines and the removal of manual checks and balances has meant that modern pipelines are potential single points of failure in the delivery of secure software.
Automotive and consumer electronics industries have long understood the need for both provenance (understanding the origin of materials) and veracity (ensuring the integrity of their manufacturing processes) in their supply chains; this presentation will address threats to software supply chains and practical approaches to reducing the fragility of your supply chain. Several examples of software supply chain failures will be presented and deconstructed to understand the typical failure modes.
At the most elementary level many pipelines are poorly constructed with low levels of repeatability and poor test coverage, in other organisations there is a lack of governance over the supply chain allowing careless or willingly negligent actors to subvert or bypass controls or testing within the pipeline. There is also no standard mechanism to ensure a ‘chain of custody’ within a pipeline due to a lack common interchange format between tools, or a standard manner to represent the steps within a pipeline build process.
This presentation will cover approaches (using ‘people and process’) in enforcing governance within a supply chain by describing best practices used in large-scale AppSec programmes. Several emerging technology initiatives will be presented: Google’s Grafeas is a means to ensure vulnerability information is represented in a uniform manner across all steps of a pipeline process, while In-Toto is a project to formally enforce the integrity of a pipeline process. A reference secure pipeline will be presented demonstrating both tools working in symphony, along with standard open source and commercial AppSec tools.
Finally the pipeline itself may become the Achille’s Heel in an organisation – many pipelines are not sufficiently hardened and are themselves open to attack by use of vulnerable components and their extensible nature, often along with very wide open permissions. Guidance will be given on hardening of typical pipelines, and a fully secured ephemeral Jenkins pipeline will be demonstrated.
Benefits of this Session: The attendee will gain an increased awareness of the pivotal importance of the software supply chain, and gain an understanding of some common failure modes and weaknesses. Most importantly the attendee will come away with practical guidance on enforcing higher levels of governance on their supply chain without reducing delivery velocity, as well as how to harden the pipeline infrastructure itself.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
